My daughter is only 11 and a cat, not a kitten, would be more than fine. Likely she will go to college in her hometown as well. I wish she'd go somewhere else, but the chances of that are slim knowing her father. His parents were dumb. "Hey go to school in town and we'll pay for it all and give you free room and board. But expand your horizons and go to school OUT of town and you pay for everything your damn self."

thankfully, don't have to deal with those people anymore. YAYAYAY!

I actually do not think that is a super bad philosophy. Personally, I think, based on my own experiences, that a un married 18-20 year old girl should live at home. I think of all the times I stayed with my ### of an ex because I was far away from home and couldn't afford living apart from him. I won't be paying for an out of area school for my daughter.

I stayed in dorms. I paid for school by myself. Children should pay for school by themselves. But I'd rather her go to University than college and get a real degree instead of a diploma.

Post secondary works differently in Canada.

I moved out as soon as I was done high school. I did not live with a boyfriend until I was 21. I likely wouldn't have lived with him then if I hadn't been pregnant.

To each their own experiences. My experience in life only slightly changes what I do for my child. She needs to learn it on her own to learn. You cannot teach these things, only live and learn.

It depends on the character of the student and the financial capabilities of the family

In today's economic climate, studying close to home has obvious economic benefits, plus giving parents the ability to keep an eye on their college kids.

However, going somewhere new to study allows for more character growth and a richer learning experience. It can cost a pretty penny, though. :(

Yeah, it must. I couldn't have paid 40k a year by myself. Still couldn't.

So colleges are more like trade schools in Canada? You can't transfer to a university?

I was sent away to school when I was 16, uni at 17 and that is when I moved in with my ex husband. We lived together for a few years before getting married and getting pregnant. I think my mother would have sent me away earlier had she known it was an option. LOL.

I ate too much tiramisu....

From the girl at work? aha.

Yeah. When I was studying for my PhD, I took on a job as a pole dancer. I had 3sons to support at the time, so don't judge me y'all. The cops and firefighters were the worst clients... Oh boy!

Colleges are at best like a community colleges down here. Some may get you a degree but most, at best, you may get to start a program to get a degree (her local college has an agreement with the University of Alberta to take the first year of an engineering degeee at the college and if your grades are good enough to switch to U of A for the last 3.) My diploma from a college, 15k, is the equivlant to an associates degree down here but an associates is a 3 year up there. Student loans are federal however and help many, including myself and my sister who has a BScN (bachelor in nursing), get a post secondary education. Granted her father makes too much money. She would not be going to boarding school nor to college at 17.
