NoLa - does the child speak 2 or more languages? if yes, sometimes 'the rules' get confusing... I remember getting tripped up with Spanish and Czech but then Italian was so much easier...

Yes and no. She'd lost about a year of English while in Denmark in preference of Danish and had trouble speaking English when we came back. She's somewhat verbal in Danish, but last year we spoke to her in English about 98% of the time because of how bad the English was. She's getting spoken to more in Danish again, but because she is struggling with reading, she's never shown written Danish. The letters are the same, but the pronunciation rules are vastly different. In fact, Danish vowels are so challenging that Danish children learn to speak and read later than their English counterparts. For example, the only real difference between e and i is pitch.

Sort of a tangent, but the window for fluency and native vowel understanding is closing for her. I think the cutoff is about 7 or 8 for Danish.

And a double tangent, take the word jeg, as an English speaker you really want to pronounce this word like peg but with a j, right?

Well, it is pronounced closer to its English meaning, I, so more like the sound for the letter y followed by saying the letter i.

I'm pretty sure if I tried to teach her to read right now in Danish, she'd never learn to read either language.

My daughter is bilingual and has no problems differentiating the 2 languages.

And, why should I have to manage people? That's not what I do here. If I have to do the personnel managers job, if I even have to supervise what he's doing, then he's incompetent, right? I should can him and put someone else there, right? The only good boss here is the other Jr veep.....

Honestly this is the part where you need to push the school to do an evaluation on her. From what you say she is very bright in other subjects and because of it the teachers will dismiss the possibility of any type of disability. You also held her back a year to be with her age group so they will say lets wait another year. Where as if she was in the other grade they might just maybe picked up on it. My experience is unless the child is failing miserably they will skip testing, or try to label her with some stupid ADD so they can brush her off. If your gut is telling you something follow it.

My kids never had problems with two different languages either. Normally it will delay when they first learn to speak but not so much reading.

Well, then you should teach her English. Walk her in the right direction. Drill the good habits into her routine.

I'm a firm believer that ADD is a made up thing.

Her teacher seemed to think she was excelling academically in all of her subjects when I last spoke to her about 2 months ago... I don't know if they have lower expectations or what because she wouldn't be in CT. The report cards are coming home in 2 weeks and I think I'll talk to her about it then.

Danish is kind of special. Danish children are actually the last to learn to speak in all of Europe. They usually don't learn to read until 8. So, yeah, if we were trying to teach her equally in both languages, I would suspect both would be delayed.

Troph, I think, I know, that some kids developer sooner and some later.

CT has excellent schools. It may also be because of the parents (educational level of) at that location in CT.

2- Dutch kids are retarded...

That is what I mean. Didn't you hold her back to match her up with the kids there? So her year is repeated work, she will do better with the stuff she already knows. Follow your gut if you think something is off get her tested.

I'm also a firm believer that all Canadian women are brutes.....

I learned a long time ago that teachers are not superior to the parents and need to be told when they are wrong. I put up with way too much bull at the expense of my kids.

Of course education starts at home. I read with her, I do math with her, I pique her interests, I store the enthusiasm in her. I get her ready to learn, I get her to school. I get her to like going there.

The school does the rest.

I'm a firm believer that Canadian women don't bathe as often as they should, though they have an abundant supply of water.......

I just thought of a good question to ask Trophie.

How does she do in math?
