I was watching a documentary by Richard Dawkins on faith based schools in England and he was talking about why they got better scores - and the reality of it was that the parents who clawed and fought to get their kids places at the "better" schools were simply more involved in their kids' schooling and homework. Parents who sent them wherever the state said, cared less, and hence the kids did worse.

I notice it especially with my daughter - her math skills are beyond superb and right now we just work on a much higher grade than she's at to keep her sharp, but her reading needs my daily attention at home. We drill words, we do reading comprehension workbooks, we read, read, read. I imagine how a child without similar home supervision and motivation might end up in school.

I couldn't agree more. But I didn't need some idiotic research to tell me that.

A child needs to be prepared for school, not the schools needs to prepare the child....

If a parent lack that common sense, then their kid won't excel.

But school is very important. It's where they will learn their social skills and a little competitiveness. As well as other skills that they will need to get through life in a society (like selflessness, and compassion, empathy and sympathy, etc)

And I have to give credit where credit is due. The principal of my kids school is awesome. She ran that school for 20 years now, and has made the model the envy of many schools.

the kids love the school, and they love going there. That's what counts.

So they plowed the alleys but not the streets and now there are drifts from where they plowed across in the streets. That is freaking stupid.

And my BIL thinks kids should learn by themselves. He insist not helping his son who's in the first grade currently. Well, apart from reading what has to be done as homework.

Stupid SOB, but you just can't make him change his decision about it...

So my sister is all alone with supervising his son. And I think it will happen with the second one as well, when he goes to school in September.
