I've always had to buy all the supplies for the kiddo and my parents always had to buy our school supplies too. The difference between BC and AB was that in AB you had to pay for the kids to stay at school during lunch to make sure the supervisors were paid. I always hated when people complained about raised taxes when more money was being spent on good spots (education etc), but totally understood when taxes were raised (property taxes in AB pay for schools) and then school funding is cut... something is wrong.

Here, the schools in da ghetto gets everything bought for them, and the kids.

In my hood, the kids' supplies are paid by the parents. And much of the modern equipment are paid by the parents/ PTA/ Sales, etc. Down to the pencil and paper they use. So the school can use their funds for something else. Like interactive blackboards and stuff....

But yet, everyday, all I hear is this fing clown trying to tell me how unfair it is that my kid goes to a better school than the kids in the poorer enclaves.....

Better still, I see poor people trekking to my kids school, somehow, and got their kids in my daughter's school. So, not every kid in that school comes from an upper background. The parents are the ones that made the difference. They don't mind taking the train for 30 minutes, or the bus, to bring their kid to this school.

Some of them cram in a small little apt in this area, just so they can get their kids to this school. And that's respectable. And I bet those parents spend time with their kids at home to read. And I don't mind giving more to make up for their slack.

What I do mind, is this clown using the schools in poorer neighborhoods as a political tool. Because as long as I'm concerned, if those kids came to my kids school, the results will be the same, they'd ruin this here school.

Well we don't have the option to move the kids to a better school as they don't exist. They made it so all the kids rich or poor are stuck in the same schools so now all the schools under perform. They make the parents here buy all the things then the schools use a point system to bribe the parents to buy extra supplies for the school. The kids get so many points that are needed to pass, this ticks me off.

I keep trying to tell hubs that any kibble that has a grain in the second ingredient spot needs to be struck off our list as an okay food because cats don't need carbs like that. I bought some Iams wet food from work, but only because it was the best wet food at WORK (aka Target) vs being an actual good wet food. Well I guess my old cat did fine on dry friskies and science diet his whole life so at least this cat gets some wet foods.

it's like rolling dice, some cats will be fine on cheap, poorer quality food and some cats won't. my cat got urinary blockages because of all the grains he was consuming in his diet - it is more common in male cats because of how their urethra is shaped. now he's on a prescription diet (royal canin urinary so) that is really expensive ($40/bag of dry food a month and $2 per can per day) to prevent it from happening again in addition to getting one capsule a day of cosequin.

some people feed royal canin urinary so even to cats without urinary problems, which is fine. but a cheaper option is wellness or evo. kudos to you for doing the research so early in your kitty's life.

What's wrong with the kitty, and why are you doing wet food? It's not really needed.

that's what i thought too! but dry food is essentially junk food for kitties, like potato chips, or french fries. they should ideally be fed a 100% wet food diet with kibble as an occasional treat, not the other way around.

I was watching a documentary by Richard Dawkins on faith based schools in England and he was talking about why they got better scores - and the reality of it was that the parents who clawed and fought to get their kids places at the "better" schools were simply more involved in their kids' schooling and homework. Parents who sent them wherever the state said, cared less, and hence the kids did worse.

I notice it especially with my daughter - her math skills are beyond superb and right now we just work on a much higher grade than she's at to keep her sharp, but her reading needs my daily attention at home. We drill words, we do reading comprehension workbooks, we read, read, read. I imagine how a child without similar home supervision and motivation might end up in school.
