Arent the gases in flourescent bulbs toxic? What impact would this have on the environment if everyone had flourescents??

We may just have to ban all light in Cal.:whistle:

Yes, they have a small amount of mercury.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

That certainly should be a concern.

While I agree with the wosdom of using flourescent lightbulbs, I'm not sure politicians can outright ban incandescents.. Maybe encourage flo's but .. ban incandescents? wouldnt that be against constitutional rights? (the freedom to waste electricity?) while they are at it, why not ban Hummers and other gas guzzling vehicles?

Sure they can. The state of California taxes energy use, regulates the type, number and where transformers can be built, etc. Engergy is regulated. The state's interests are valid in this situation in forward thinking assessments of future energy use.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

I wonder if people forgot the rolling power blackouts that took place in California a few years ago - due to the thoroughly corrupt Democrat governor selling off the state's energy resources and then reimporting them at a hugely inflated price.

Car are emissions controlled by law, and if I remember rightly some cities impose hosepipe bans in hot weather. Why should preserving electricity be any different?

Not to mention regulations on water use, road use, land use, telephone and cable use. It's the same thing, but meaningful (except for the water thing).

Let's just ban California while we're at it! :P

The rest of the country would crumble...bow down before us, you ungrateful, whiney Americans. :P

As of 2005, The gross state product (GSP) is about $1.62 trillion, the largest in the country. California is responsible for 13% of the United States gross domestic product (GDP). As of 2005, California's GDP is larger than all but seven countries' in the world (and all but eight countries by Purchasing Power Parity).

I'm always saying this when the California bashing starts in, but it doesn't sink in. And I'll say it again, we get very little of our federal income taxes back in services, compared to the $$ other states get. So California funds federal services in other states at a rate we don't see here.

It'd be ok. People in California are more used to paying outrageous prices on everything! I'm sure they'd protest less than people in other states, plus there more for the clean air acts and all that jazz.

Do they make those swirly bulbs in 100watt? My lizard needs 100W bulbs. I might look into this! They last longer too eh? Seems like i'm always replacing light bulbs, of course at about $.25 each it doesn't break my heart when one burns out.

Are your sure your lizard needs a regular 100W bulb? Are they kept indoors or do they have direct sunlight? I had a green iguana and a spiny tailed iguana when I was younger. Their cage was indoors out of direct sunlight. Both of them started acting very sluggish and wouldn't eat. When I spoke the a reptile vet the first thing he asked was what I was feeding them and the 2nd was what kind of light they were under. I had 2 standard 4' fluorescent bulbs in their cage. As it turns out I needed to have different bulbs - they were more like those used to grow plants indoors. The local pet store knew exactly what they were and even carried them in stock. I changed the bulbs to those and shortly after the iguanas were happy campers again.

"The predominant industry, more than twice as large as the next, is agriculture, (including fruit, vegetables, dairy, and wine). This is followed by aerospace; entertainment, primarily television by dollar volume, although many movies are still made in California; light manufacturing, including computer hardware and software; and the mining of borax."

Interesting. I think it's a step in the right direction.

i agree. in fact, just about every lightbulb in my house is of this type. however, do you think you can afford to pay $5-7 per lightbulb when this law goes into effect?

i can see it now - instead of smuggling pot into cali, it will be light bulbs.

I saw some at Albertsons ... I think they were selling 3 of them for under 5 bucks :o
