I wonder if people forgot the rolling power blackouts that took place in California a few years ago - due to the thoroughly corrupt Democrat governor selling off the state's energy resources and then reimporting them at a hugely inflated price.

Car are emissions controlled by law, and if I remember rightly some cities impose hosepipe bans in hot weather. Why should preserving electricity be any different?

my point exactly :)

In fact, I seem to remember that during a particularly savage heat wave in July last year, State officials were on the news pleading with the public to limit their use of air conditioning because there was a real danger that demand could exhaust supply. Anything to conserve energy (rather than wasting huge sums of money building new power plants) would seem to be common sense.

Well that's kinda my point right there....what next? report your neighbor for using his AC?

Anyone with half a brain can see the financial benefits of these bulbs, and I am all for the bulbs as well, just making the old ones 'illegal' seems a bit strange

now hiring.....light bulb police :P

Complete with mandatory drive-by home inspections ... film at 11:00p :help:

Oh please...enforcement of such ban will most likely mean that stores and utility companies will no longer stock them. Office buildings already use fluorescent lights exclusively.

Which office buildings? The ones in California? I ask because I know not all office buildings in Michigan use only fluorescent lights.. And I"m sure there are more across the states that dont..

Well I don't think the proposal is to make it illegal for people to use those bulbs, but rather for stores to sell them.

I don't know about you but I really can't see people sneaking down to Mexico just to buy old, energy inefficient light bulbs....

They've already banned 5 gallon toilets.

Maybe next they will ban SUVs.

Arent the gases in flourescent bulbs toxic? What impact would this have on the environment if everyone had flourescents??

We may just have to ban all light in Cal.:whistle:

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

It'd be ok. People in California are more used to paying outrageous prices on everything! I'm sure they'd protest less than people in other states, plus there more for the clean air acts and all that jazz.

Do they make those swirly bulbs in 100watt? My lizard needs 100W bulbs. I might look into this! They last longer too eh? Seems like i'm always replacing light bulbs, of course at about $.25 each it doesn't break my heart when one burns out.

Your lizard probably needs the heat of a 100 watt bulb, not the equivalent light output. Fluorescents run cooler so a 23 watt will have the light output of a 100 watt bulb but much less heat. I don't want to see your lizard die.

Ah! He'd be ok... he's a desert lizard, i'm sure it'd be a bit of a vacation from his normal 90-100 degree heat! I might have to play around with different ones, he has electronic thermometers i'd make sure it didn't get too hot :)

By the way, I had to watch a movie last week in a class at college called "The inconvient truth" It would show you that California is actually making good measures to help our environment... unlike the rest of US who tried to SUE california for their higher emissions standards on their vehicles. I'm all for my gaz guzzling (24mpg) compact car... but then again, I wish that smart cars (50-60 mpg) weren't illegal in the US :(. I'd have me a hot little Smart roadster! European countries are so far advanced compared to the US on such things... better emissions and better gas milage - so using less fossil fuels. Only makes sense really. Although i'm wondering why their gas prices are still so high.

While the light bulb is 19th century technology the florescent bulb isn't far behind. It is more efficient but there is an option that is much better. LED's have come to the point where they can be used for lighting. They are much more efficient and last much longer.

Let's just ban California while we're at it! :P

The rest of the country would crumble...bow down before us, you ungrateful, whiney Americans. :P

As of 2005, The gross state product (GSP) is about $1.62 trillion, the largest in the country. California is responsible for 13% of the United States gross domestic product (GDP). As of 2005, California's GDP is larger than all but seven countries' in the world (and all but eight countries by Purchasing Power Parity).
