It'd be ok. People in California are more used to paying outrageous prices on everything! I'm sure they'd protest less than people in other states, plus there more for the clean air acts and all that jazz.

Do they make those swirly bulbs in 100watt? My lizard needs 100W bulbs. I might look into this! They last longer too eh? Seems like i'm always replacing light bulbs, of course at about $.25 each it doesn't break my heart when one burns out.

i've seen them in 40 up to 100 watts. they last about 3-4 times longer. i started swapping them out after i bought my house as some bulbs were a pain to replace (way up in the ceiling). then it was just a matter of changing out the rest as they burned out.

What a BRIGHT idea...

While I agree with the wosdom of using flourescent lightbulbs, I'm not sure politicians can outright ban incandescents.. Maybe encourage flo's but .. ban incandescents? wouldnt that be against constitutional rights? (the freedom to waste electricity?) while they are at it, why not ban Hummers and other gas guzzling vehicles?

California already has stringent emission control laws, this potential law doesn't surprise me, and frankly, I am all for it.

Your lizard probably needs the heat of a 100 watt bulb, not the equivalent light output. Fluorescents run cooler so a 23 watt will have the light output of a 100 watt bulb but much less heat. I don't want to see your lizard die.

We've been using the swirls for a couple of years now. We just moved to a new house a month ago, and we haven't replaced all of the bulbs yet, but most of the ones that we use every day we have. We still need to replace a few more though, and get a new energy efficient frige (the one here is nearly 20 years old now! The only major appliance not updated by my in-laws when they renovated the kitchen) and a fuel efficient vehicle of some sort.

The money you save alone should be incentive enough IMO. Our electric bill *did* go down at our last house after we switched every bulb in the house we could to the compact fluorescents. They do pay for themselves. And then some.

I actually really like the quality of light that an incandesent bulb puts out. And I absolutely HATE the light that flourescent bulbs put out. Unless they're different than the one's that are overhead in my office, no way do I want to switch. Flourescent light is horrid. The one exception is the light that's outside my back door.

They make fluorescents that put out soft/warm light just like the incandescents. So you can pick pretty much any any color light you want. So that's not an excuse anymore.

Hmmm.... I'll have to check that out. Cos flourescent light, the "old" flourescent light, sucks. :P

I wonder if people forgot the rolling power blackouts that took place in California a few years ago - due to the thoroughly corrupt Democrat governor selling off the state's energy resources and then reimporting them at a hugely inflated price.

Car are emissions controlled by law, and if I remember rightly some cities impose hosepipe bans in hot weather. Why should preserving electricity be any different?

In fact, I seem to remember that during a particularly savage heat wave in July last year, State officials were on the news pleading with the public to limit their use of air conditioning because there was a real danger that demand could exhaust supply. Anything to conserve energy (rather than wasting huge sums of money building new power plants) would seem to be common sense.

Well that's kinda my point right there....what next? report your neighbor for using his AC?

Anyone with half a brain can see the financial benefits of these bulbs, and I am all for the bulbs as well, just making the old ones 'illegal' seems a bit strange

Oh it does suck!!! I just bought a house in Thailand and I changed every bulb to a soft/warm light from that horrible white fluorescent light.
