Hi all,

It's Obamacare enrollment time and I am confused as to what I should be looking for.

I do not have insurance through work and do not have a green card (just EAD at the moment) and my husband is a student/has no income.

I guess I'm just having sticker shock at the price over here.

What do you folks pay for a monthly premium?

1) Do not get an HMO!!! This is ####### insurance.

2) Do not sign up for dental insurance. A majority of them have an annual cap of $ 1,500.00 Just pay out of pocket.

3) Get a PPO policy. Now the hard part. Which one to get.

I have a Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Here are my stats.

My premium is $ 1,017.00 for both my wife and I. I do not quailify for subsidy from U.S. Govt. so I foot the enitre bill.

I am on the GOLD PLAN ( Don't waste your time looking at platnum plans)

Things to consider.

a) Get a MSP ( Multi State Plan)

b) Get High Premium with $ 1,000.00 deducible. Why, because your out of pocket maximum will be around $ 2,500.00 per year. Go with a low premium and SUPER HIGH deductible and your out of pocket will be around 4,500.00 to 6,000.00 year. With a max out of pocket that high, you might as well go with the higer premium with 1,000.00 deductible.

Just my thoughts for you.

Here is a good policy for your to consider depending on the state you live in

Premium 1, MSP

or

Premium 2, MSP

The premium will be around $ 1,000 / month but the the subsidy payment, your monthly premium will be around $ 300.00 to 400.00 AND you will have a fantastic health insurance policy.

I am not an insurance agent, I've just done a lot of homework.

Sorry I forgot to mention. the Premier 1, MSP and Premier 2, MSP are through Blue Cross / Blue Shield.

Also I would like to add, with a PPO, you can walk into an emergency room, throw the insurance card on the desk, and you will not have any issues.

With HMO's, your selections are severly severly limited on where you can go.

Please keep in mind that some dates are only known after receipt of another document.

I personally don't get it. It's very hard for me to undestand and frustrating. I still have no insurance we were waiting for my EAD and I hope I can get something thru a job.

I'm interested on seeing what people say in this post, how much they pay etc.....

What do you folks pay for a monthly premium?

Premiums will all depend on the type of plan you have, how many members are on the plan, and even the state you live in. You are eligible to purchase insurance through the exchange or obtain insurance through an employer, or purchase insurance privately. HMOs and PPO both have pros and cons. Having open access insurance allows you to go to whatever doctor you want as long as they participate. My plan is not through the exchange and was purchased privately before the law came into being, therefore it is grandfathered in. It runs about $300 a month these days. Routine dental care in particular for children is generally covered especially since the ACA went into effect, however you're often lucky to find a dentist that will participate with insurance providers. Sometimes employers will provide an additional separate dental insurance plan.

Some plans are more of a ''wellness'' type. That means you have okay coverage, lower premiums, but a higher deductible when you get sick. Others have higher premiums, even better coverage, and a lower deductible. How much you will pay vs what your insurance will cover, all depends on the plan you choose. Does your workplace offer any sort of insurance? How does your spouse obtain insurance?

Some plans will require prior authorization for procedures and certain tier drugs. Some high tier drugs are excluded entirely and the insurance will demand you use something less effective or a comparable generic until the doctor proves why you need it.

Unfortunately, there's no real way to get around the cost. It will get you one way or another.

A small tip however, it's a little bit of a misnomer to say going to a hospital and providing an insurance card will mean you are covered. Funny story actually. My sister was pretty sick for about two years. A lot of hospital visits during that time. Some were for the ER, a few others were for some very costly surgeries. It may interest you to know that not all PA's and doctors in the ER actually participate with your insurance (let alone ANY insurance) AT ALL, regardless of if your particular hospital says you are covered. They will not discuss that with you either. Many hospitals often outsource doctors for cheaper. Therefore don't be surprised if a bill shows up from a doctor. I've seen it happen to many a person in the ER, after a surgery, even after having baby! In one instance of my sister's surgery, the doctor needed a very specialized assistant. He elected to outsource and fly in such an individual to the hospital to help him. During recovery at home, she began receiving bills from a doctor she had never heard of - and as it turns out it was this assistant. Thankfully the surgeon was kind enough to sort out and pay that bill himself. The insurance company was having none of it.

If you figure it out, let us know ok?? LOL....we don't have insurance through the marketplace (Obamacare) as hubby as it through work. We pay 167.00 a week for the two of us and have a 2,500 deductible for each of us. I go through work so telling you my premium won't be helpful. I'm curious, is your husband under 26 and still covered by his parent's insurance?

If you're looking for work, you may find your new employer has a plan you can be covered under, that will still cost you something.

One thing coming from Canada is that we're so used to just walking in, showing our healthcard and not having to pay anything. Forget what you used to know, you're now in the US where there is a price for everything.

I agree somewhat with another poster that you wnat to look for coverage for the following:

1st - Medical is most important - this does NOT include vision (eye doctor or glasses) - its everythign from normal Drs visits, major medical, hospital and prescriptions

2nd - Dental - premiums aren't usually too bad - if you're young, have good teeth and few problems a basic plan which covers cleanings twice yearly and xrays perhaps once yearly - it is worth it instead of paying out of pocket - they tend to have deductibles which means - no matter what you may pay the first $100/person/year before insurance kicks in and covers the cleanings. Things like fillings may be covered at 80/20 - meaning you pay the 20%, insurance covers 80%. Skip Dental if you can't afford it.

3rd - Vision coverage - if you don;t have an income, I would skip Vision coverage altogether- they usually only pay 80/20 (or less)and sometimes they limit you to which frames/lenses and coatings are even covered under the plan. Its just an annoyance at best when you can go to Costco and frames/lenses for very good prices.

In network/ out of network - a concept which iihard to grasp at first. A doctor make take your insurance but that doesn't mean they're in your insurance provider's network - it means you will pay less - their services will be covered under the 80/20 rule (for example). If they were not in network, your insurance may only reimburse you 50/50 - meaning your responsibility is 50% of the cost instead of 20% - OUCH!

- this can occur for medical, dental or vision doctors. You learn to ask 'Are you in network for X' instead of asking if they simply take X

Deductible - its what you pay out of pocket prior to insurance kickling in. Many HDHP plan (High deductible health plans) are structured this way - you may may the first $2000 out of pocket before the 80/20 piece kicks in - this would be pretty rough for someone with no income unless you have $$$ in the bank saved.

ex: Our family coverage has a $3200 deductible...we pay the first $3200 each year before our insurance company starts paying 80/20. Our premiums are so low though, that it's worth it to fork out the $3200.

Lots to digest - best to go through the profile tool carefully on the site and answer the questions correctly so that recommendations can be made based on what your'e will to spend and can afford

1 thing you learn quickly is what in/out of network means.........As well, just asking if you take my insurance..means nothing! As they may take it, but if they are not in network, they may actually only cover very little! We have BCBS and I just gfo onto their webpage and check to see if that Dr is in covered!! You will find a great Dr......then he will change what insurance he accepts, then u get to start over and try and find a new 1!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I agree with flames, once you find an insurance then make sure you're using in-network doctors. I use my health care provider's website to find a doctor. We have a HDHP, and pay 3000 in network and then they cover 95%. We have different plans than most Americans though because my husband works for the government.

It really is all over the place... we are "lucky" - my husband's employer covers 100% of the insurance cost, no network, no referral - deductible and max out-of pocket is $300 per person/$600 per family. Vision, dental and other types of care (chiropractor, etc.) are not bad either.

I was doing lots of homework regarding this matter. We are not eligible for Obama's subsidy, but I still logged in to their system and checked what they offer. Actually they offer higher prices and wors plans, then just going straight to the insurance company page and choose/ purchase directly. This is exactly what we did.

Our platinum premium in 2014 was 960$ 3 people, 2015 went up to 1072$. 0$ deductibles, low out of pocket, 0% coinsurance, just small co payments/or none ( even inpatient surgery and hospitalisation) , no referrals, in network only, out of state emergency only. Keeping our plan for 2015, very happy with it.

I'm looking at the total insurance claims during 2014. Insurance paid to the doctors 4230$, and we never got any difficult medical conditions. Just some routine checkups or colds, few labs. Just think how fast it would add up with more serious problems.

We also have Humana dental. Monthly payment is 25$ per member, but it gives you discounts on fillings, free cleanings, free xrays and so on.
