Does anyone have any facts about a BIG fee increase for USCIS?

There's an alarming article in the MiamiHerald today saying they want to hugely increase the fees for immigration services. The only example they give is for permanent residence, which they want to increase from $325 to $905. I don't know about anyone else but this is making a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Immigration is a HUGE financial stretch all around and they want to increase it THAT much? It's not like it's something that can be put off or postponed - once you're in the system you have to keep on paying when they tell you to or give up... (panicking)

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

So far we have managed to beat several US-CIS rate increases every step of the way. I hope our luck holds out. My wife will be eligible to file for citizenship in October of this year.

I read this info earlier in our local news, but for now it is just a proposal. It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings...and she hasn't. ;)

I'm pretty sure that they'll do whatever they want and we'll have no choice but to pay, the same as the electricity companies do what they want and the insurance business walks all over people and so on and so on... I gravely doubt that anyone who matters will shout loud enough to make a difference :( I just want to know how much more I'll be socked for to lift conditions in October, because we have to start saving now. Our landlord wouldn't take it too kindly if we said 'sorry, we can't pay you any rent this month because USCIS took it...'

Typical governmental bs... so instead of giving you the choice of whether you want to get a travel permit and a work permit, they're forcing you to pay for them whether you need them or not. Isn't that nice of them... (feeling cynical tonight)

If you go read the press releases at uscis.gov (there are several) it explains the comment period and how you can get yoru two cents' worth in.. might make you feel better :)

If you can get anything in ahead of October, it looks like that will be the new in-effect date. That is when fiscal 08/09 starts.

No can do (which is frustrating...) my conditional residency expires in January, so the soonest I can apply to lift conditions is October 13 (and it's marked on my calender so I don't lose track...) I'm just going to go away and pretend I never heard anything about it and when the time comes we'll pony up like good little robots. It costs what it costs and such is life...

Wow. I guess I need to do my homework more often.

We're supposed to apply for lifting of conditions in Sept.

And what the heck happened to the USCIS official site?! I can't find anything. /cry
