Tax Papers VS. Transcripts

Hi all,

My question is regarding the need for tax transcripts.. I have in my hand the paperwork from our tax preparer for the last 3 years and am about to send them in to the IRS.. I am wondering if I can use a photocopy of these papers instead of the tax transcripts? since transcripts will take 6-8 weeks to get, and by then I will have overstayed my 6 months creating a whole new bundle of issues?

Do I NEED to send the transcripts, or will a copy of the information be proof enough that we have filed?

As I recall, the instructions say something like "send copies of tax return or transcripts."

I plan to just send copies of the tax returns themselves.

Copies of your tax returns are okay to send. USCIS will electronically verify the information with the IRS so it doesn't matter whether you send the copies of your tax return or transcripts. Remember to include 2013 W2s.

My husband is self employed so there is no W2's. Will this be a problem? Or they will verify with IRS so it is no concern?

I set up an account and downloaded 4 years of tax transcripts.

The hard part is setting up the account.

Had to try 5 times to choose a password that the system liked.

Even worse was answering questions to verify I was who I said I was.

Like . . . you closed a mortgage account back in 2005. What were your required monthly payments?

I had no idea. So I failed and had to start all over again.

Another set of questions popped up on this second try. I also didn't know answer but guessed . . . and was lucky to get it correct.

If your husband is self-employed don't worry about W2s. Just make sure that you include copies of every schedule in your Federal tax return. Do not include your state tax return, USCIS does not need it.
