1. Does those arrests invalidate the fact he was choked to death?

2. He was clearly in distress. No excuse. He wasn't faking it, a blind person could figure that out.

Answers:

1) No, but that was not my point. Just letting people know the police were not dealing with a choir boy. This relevant fact (of his 30 prior arrests) was rarely mentioned in coverage of this incident.

2) Not making excuses if he was truly in distress. But signs of distress CAN be faked, and it is possible an officer could risk his safety if he could not recognize it.

OMG. After reading most of this thread I just had to watch the video of the police clearly killing an innocent man.

Unfortunately, all I saw was a known criminal and liar refusing to obey orders and had to be restrained.

Looked like a normal takedown.

Not sure about the paramedics and what they are required to do. It is unfortunates that he died ,but Garner made a choice to resist arrest. It is not the officers fault he had an existing medical condition.

Yeah another big deal about nothing. I'm waiting for the next one where the black guy is armed with multiple assault weapons and hand grenades in a shootout with police. How many thousands will march for that guy when the cops kill him?

It's becoming clearer everyday that this country has a large percentage of idiots.

1. Actually, his arrest record was mentioned in the article quite plainly. It doesn't change the fact they choked him to death. And who is a choir boy in this day and age? Is that the per-requisite in order to claim police brutality? He wasn't committing a crime. That should matter more.

2. He was clearly in distress. Take a look at the video, he had his hands up. Talk about a catch 22, if he would have tried to fight, he would have been shot dead, at no time did he even try to stop the choking out. And no EMT support afterwards? They couldn't care less.

Garner was resisting Marvin, let's not make this out as if he was some submissive nice guy that complied with what the cops wanted. Sure the cops went overboard, but Garner also played a role in it.

My point was he wasn't out swinging at the cops. When he was on the ground, the pressure should have come off.

except the fact that they didn't

After the incident, city medical examiners concluded that Garner was killed by neck compression from the apparent chokehold.

which is clearly BS, because he was talking during and after. but, hand up has been proven to be BS too. and that hasn't stopped you from claiming it.

In an interview with Tavis Smiley, Bill O'Reilly did something that caused tension. He quoted actual facts and statistics:

“I think this would’ve happened to a white guy doing the same thing,” O’Reilly said. “I don’t think it had to do with skin color. I think it had to do with poor judgments made by the group of police officers.”
Smiley rejected O’Reilly’s comments as “speculation” and then listed off several black victims who have been killed, including Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Sean Bell.
“There is no respect for the humanity and the dignity for black life in this country,” he added.
O’Reilly then pulled out two statistics that seemingly hurt Smiley’s allegations that police officers are indiscriminately targeting black people.
“Do you know how many blacks were killed by police by gunfire last year?” O’Reilly asked.
“Off the top of my head, I don’t,” Smiley replied.
“The number is 123,” O’Reilly said. “Do you know how many whites were killed? 326.”
“There are 43 million-plus black Americans — 123 were killed by police gunfire,” he continued. “There isn’t an epidemic of this. … But when it happens it’s extremely troubling.”
When a stunned Smiley asked O’Reilly if he really doesn’t see a “pattern” on the issue, the Fox News host replied, “I don’t because the statistics don’t say there’s a pattern.”
“Again, 123 deaths out of 43 million-plus is minuscule — every death is a tragedy, I’m with you,” he added. “Three times as many whites are shot by police than blacks. I don’t think it’s hunting down blacks.”
Smiley correctly noted that there are more white than black people in the United States and reiterated that it is “open season, hunting season” on blacks.
