4 EMS workers barred from duty after chokehold death

Four emergency-service workers who found a man unconscious on the sidewalk after a cop put him in a chokehold and apparently did nothing to aid him have been barred from going on any more ambulance calls pending a probe, officials said Sunday.

A seven-minute video captured the last few minutes of diabetic dad Eric Garners life and the apparent procedural lapses by two medics and two EMTs, sources told The Post.

It was pretty obvious this patient was in distress, a source said. His body was limp and lifeless.

Yet none of the workers nor the eight cops on hand can be seen in the video administering any aid to Garner. One medic at Garners side doesnt even have any of the required equipment on her, such as an oxygen bag or a defibrillator, the source said.

You can [only] hear her say, Oh, he cant walk to the bus?  the source said.

Eric Garners father, mother and wife joined supporters at a rally Sunday.

Garner should have been immediately placed on a stretcher, and his airway, breathing and circulation checked, sources said. Instead, EMT Nicole Palmeri can be seen only checking for a pulse. She never uses a stethoscope to check his lungs for air movement, a source said, nor does she connect him to an oxygen mask.

Maybe the EMT felt a pulse, but it was obvious this male was in serious distress and needed to be assisted with his breathing, the source said.

Garner died of cardiac arrest en route to the hospital.

Palmeri and the other emergency workers are employed by Richmond University Hospital on Staten Island, but dispatched by the FDNY, which issued the restriction.

Palmeri did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Garner who was 6-foot-5, about 350 pounds and suffered from asthma was suspected of illegally peddling cigarettes when cops approached him at around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Undercover Officer Daniel Pantaleo was caught on video putting him in a chokehold a violation of NYPD procedure.

Pantaleo has been named in two civil-rights lawsuits, one of which was settled by the city for $30,000, the Staten Island Advance reported Sunday. Pantaleo and three other officers unlawfully stopped a vehicle and strip-searched two men.

Pantaleo, who has been stripped of his badge and weapon, did not return requests for comment.

State NAACP President Hazel Dukes said, Communities of color are sick and tired of this familiar story. Mr. Garner is one of too many New Yorkers who have unjustly had their lives cut short by police officers.

This proves they messed up big time after he was unconscious. Regardless of whether he should have been arrested or wrestled to the ground, more should have been done once he passed out.

Any more info on the choke hold cop and the strip search? It sounds like he has a history.

The question should be . Did the EMT and crew not handle this situation correctly. He was breathing when they arrived and perhaps when he was loaded. . Should more have been done at the scene prior to loading. Perhaps the police in NY City don't carry very much medical wise in the cars that would have helped. Someone with EMT experience maybe could answer this today. I have read he should have been in a sitting position to assist the breathing if possible.due to his size .

"It sounds like he has a history."

His history is f*cking irrelevant. Who cares what his history was? What matters is what he was doing at the time of his death and we know what he was doing because we WATCHED it. What is this need that some of you have to drag someone through the mud when they're dead in order to somehow justify his death? I don't care how many times he was arrested. He wasn't being hostile, he wasn't being violent. He was unarmed with his hands up. Isn't that what we keep hearing Mike Brown should have done? Put his hands up and show he didn't have a weapon. Eric Garner did this and STILL DIED.

I mean, good lord, a guy can walk into a movie theater and shoot up the place and be taken into custody alive and unharmed, but an unarmed guy on the street with his hands up is choked to death and there are people debating his criminal history. He was begging for his life, telling them he couldn't breathe, and nobody did a damn thing about it. But yes, let's definitely talk about his prior arrests. That absolutely matters in the last few minutes of his life when he's doing nothing wrong.

Sick.

I mean, I stayed away from most of the Ferguson nonsense because at least there was conflicting witness accounts of what happened there. But in this case, that doesn't exist. We saw exactly what happened and how it happened. Anyone who can watch that video and think "hm well he had prior arrests and he's big, so I understand how a cop could have KILLED HIM IN A CHOKEHOLD" is insane.

Not at all. Muslims kill more Muslims also

I met a Muslim lady tonight at Belks. She was working there and had on the head scarf thing. She helped my wifes Filipina friend get a discount on a purse. nice lady

I still checked it to make sure it did not have a bomb before i left the store

The had blacks.asians and Muslims working in the store. In the deep south no less

P.S. I can give you 7K off a brand new 2014 Camry SE with nav and moon roof.

Make it a SUV and I'll think about it.

I don't know if it has been covered earlier in this thread, as I have been too lazy to read through it all - and this case has been all over the news here - but I'd like to point out a couple of things:

1) Garner had 30 prior arrests.

2) Although emergency care should always be rendered when necessary, shouldn't the cops be on guard for possible faking of breathing difficulties in this type of situation? This may have complicated things, since he was resisting them and was huge.

1. Does those arrests invalidate the fact he was choked to death?

2. He was clearly in distress. No excuse. He wasn't faking it, a blind person could figure that out.

What's missing is a lack of compassion. When it comes to victims of color, ANYTHING that can invalidate them as a law biding citizen will be used. This is why I can't understand why a guy can kill a cop and wound another one be arrested without losing his life but a guy whose claim to criminal infamy is selling untaxed cigarets was choked to death in broad daylight while on film.

It was not difficult to envision a Washington supported tax evader and race baiter making sure he was in the mix of Ferguson and now the tragic death of Eric Garner. Michael Brown lost his life, not because he's black, but for attacking and assaulting a police officer. Eric Garner lost his life, not because he's black, but because of heavy handed take down techniques used in today's police forces. Eric Garner did not need to die.

These dissimilar events are being cleverly used by Obama and Holder to fuel racial divisiveness in America. They have created two distinct audiences. The majority are sick and tired of watching this bullshit. And the remaining just seem to enjoy causing more divisiveness.

Because EMTs on a regular stand around and watch people struggle to take their last breathes. Because the responsibility of EMTs is to NOT stabilize a person until they arrive at the hospital. This is no excuse!

Obama and Holder didn't racially fuel anything. Them being in office made the racist who had taken a subtle approach to racism rear their ugly heads once again because a half black person took office.

The EMTs came after the fact. If the police had not used such heavy handed takedown methods he would still be alive.

Make no mistake that the events in Ferguson and New York are being cleverly manipulated by Obama and Holder. How do I know that? Watch when they and their supporters speak about these events. Both have tossed each and every one of Americas law enforcement officers under the bus.

I meant that the suspended cop has a history. This appears to be his third incident from the article lost posted.

Read it again and it should be clear.
