Extra Baggage Allowance

I was wondering if anyone knows if you can get more baggage allowance when emigrating to the US? Im going to fly with British Airways so just wondered if theres any extra allowance?

BA charge about £60 per person for the first extra bag in economy and £120 for the second. In PE you get two bags with more weight allowance (32 kg vs the 23 kg in economy) and you will pay £120 for your third bag. It may be worth looking at the total upgrade cost for PE vs the extra bags, considering the extra 18 kg you get with the allowed 2 bags, rather than paying £180 for a third. You only have to upgrade one segment of your flight (i.e. you can add the extra bags or upgrade to PE on the outbound only if you buy a return and don't use the inbound part of the ticket).

Personally, I won't touch BA again unless I'm paid an extortionate amount for the misery of flying with them, so if you haven't already bought your ticket, it could be worth looking at other airlines for comparison. What BA do offer is a generous 23kg carry-on allowance so if you factor this in, along with a laptop bag or backpack as your personal item, you can get a lot over in one trip.

The airlines offer no perks to immigrants. You pay whatever everybody else would pay for baggage. You may have to put some things in boxes and look at sending over that way as a cheaper alternative. You pay no duty on things you send or carry on board. Edited November 28, 2014 by Nich-Nick

We flew Iceland Air from Manchester to Boston Ma...they have(or did have last year) a two bag allowance for anyone flying to North America. They flights were not expensive...and we were very comfy.

Nich-Nick pretty much hit the nail on the head there.

We were lucky enough to have relatives visit with empty suitcases which helped, but I still have a considerable amount to get across.

Have a look at sites like excess-baggage.com. They offer a couple of different shipping options and can provide things like packaging too. It really depends on how much you have.
