Sounds like a pretty good gig.. Take a years vacation .. travel around Europe or Asia ... All the while collecting unemployment bennies.. This is after you leave of your own accord.

lol. in america we allow our working poor nothing. just keep working and pay for yourself and the extremely poor. and if you want to take a break, a vacation or something..forget about it because YOU DON'T DESERVE IT. only the wealthy can afford such luxuries as living free. spare me.

You can't collect EI to do that. I'm not quite sure where that came from. Plus you can only collect EI for a certain amount of weeks. I was permitted 6 months for short term disability from work after extensive documentation (doctors notes, affidavits) and had to see my doctor every two weeks in order to keep these benefits. Even then it's only up to 55% of your salary. I've never had to use it for unemployment. However if I went in vacation outside of canada I did not receive EI for those days. You have to do weekly reports via online or telephone about income, any school or training, and time outside of your province before you receive benefits and it's a 5 week processing time. Immigration is different than vacation. Two separate issues. From

How to file a claim for Canadian Employment Insurance benefits if you reside outside Canada

You may file your claim for Canadian Employment Insurance benefits online

If you are residing in the United States and claiming regular benefits, you must be available and actively seeking work and you must provide proof that you are legally authorized to work in the United States. You will also need to submit your Record of Employment (ROE) from your Canadian employer.

That is awesome. You can split from Canada and still draw unemployment from the Canadian govt. No wonder taxes are north of 50% in Quebec. At some point people will take advantage of the goodwill. You can bet on that. They'll be exposes on CBC or CTV about people blowing the cash in Atlantic City or New Orleans. Maybe even Disneyworld. If the U.S. teaches anything, it should be that a good percentage of the people will take advantage of the system if given the opportunity.

Who cares what it's called. Who pays for it? Now you're just playing word games.

While you think it's fine that people emigrate to other country's or go on holiday while accepting unemployment benefits, I have an issue with that.
