Hello Everyone,

Just taking a look here in the AOS forum and found SAWASDEE AOS.

Some of you may know me from the SAWASDEE K1 thread.

Anyhow, my fiancee, Wan, got the visa and will be here on June 16th.

So I'll be spending more time here researching the AOS process.

I want to get Wan's SS# asap when she arrives here. I'll wait about two weeks then take her to the SS Office.

What ID is sufficient for the SS Card? I read the SS appplication instructions, but am still unclear.

It looks as if all I need is her Thai Passport with the valid K1 Visa.

Is that it?

All I need is her unexpired foreign passport and valid K1 visa.

Apparantly not Mike! As Yodrak said, MDYoung is the SSN expert, and if you had found the right information, he states the following:

If applying in maiden name you need your birth certificate and I-94 along with your passport. SSA doesn't care about your visa.

It would also be wise to have a copy of Social Security Administration Policy Site: POMS Section RM 00203.500 which you can get here.

Until the 76th day after entry an individual with K-1 status only needs to provide an unexpired I-94 showing current K-1 status to establish employment authorized status for SSN purposes. "

The passport is evidence of age and identity. The I-94 is evidence of employment authorized status.

That was not completely correct, because you didn't mention anything about the I-94, and as MDYoung stated, they don't care about the K-1 visa.

I personally am going to take along Chutima's birth certificate (along with certified English translation), since we have them, along with a copy of the policy I gave you the link too. I like to be prepared, and will probably go the end of next week.

Just wanted to make sure everything was clear.

My mistake. I thought the I-94 was the actual K1 visa. Apparently, this is not the case.

On the plane that will arrive at Wan's POE, she will be given an I-94 (long white card), along with a US customs form. She must fill out both those forms to give, along with her passport and "brown envelope" to the Inspecting Officer.

Before arriving at the POE, the I-94 needs to be filled out; both the Arrival Record and the Departure Record. The Arrival Record and top portion of the I-94 will be kept by the Immigration Officer, while the Departure Record will be stamped and stapled into her passport, allong with the date it expires.

One other thing many people do not know about; in Thailand, in order to leave the country, everyone must have a Thai Departure Card filled out prior to going through Passport Control. The airline check-in counter can provide one, if you didn't already pick up an extra one on the flight into Thailand, like I always do. For visitors, they receive their Thai Arrival and Departure Card before arriving, and the Departure Card is also stapled inside their passport. For Thai Nationals, the blank Arriaval Card will be stamped and stapled in their passport for when they return to Thailand.

Unless she adjusts status before she departs, in which case she'll never have to fill it out.
