Erdogan: women are not equal to men

10nyu13.jpg
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan set off a new controversy on Monday, declaring that women are not equal to men and accusing feminists of not understanding the special status that Islam attributes to mothers.

Addressing a meeting in Istanbul on women and justice, Erdogan said men and women are created differently, that women cannot be expected to undertake the same work as men, and that mothers enjoy a high position that only they can reach.

"You cannot put women and men on an equal footing," Erdogan said. "It is against nature. They were created differently. Their nature is different. Their constitution is different."

Erdogan added: "Motherhood is the highest position ... You cannot explain this to feminists. They don't accept motherhood. They have no such concern."

Is it possible that he didn't mean it in a derogatory fashion as most English speakers would take it? Substitute 'the same as' in place of equal and no one would argue.

Would you rather be called odd or unique? A misogynist or a woman hater? Maybe not such a good example.

Yes. I do not for an instant believe that his intention was meant to insult or berate women. Quite the opposite; his intention appears to embrace women as being different from men. But, keep in mind that he is the same man who said the following several days ago:

He raised eyebrows this month by declaring that Muslims had discovered the Americas before Christopher Columbus.

He must be talking about Zheng He. All Chinese know that he discovered the Americas before Columbus. Not only was he Muslim he was also a Eunuch so he certainly wasn't "Equal".

Zheng He was Chinese and you're right; he was Muslim. I didn't know that. There is substantial evidence that he sailed to India by way of the Malaysian straits and possibly the Americas over 100 years before the tiny Columbus boats.

I took these photos in Nanjing, China a few years ago in the same location where Zheng He built his ships. These are models of the ships constructed according to ship plans and ruins recovered in the area. They were massive and no other nation on earth approached the size.

Motherhood is the highest position

Not a fan of Erdogan who is quickly reversing a lot of progress that Turkey had made over the last few decades but there, he has a point. Motherhood is not nearly valued as much as it needs to be. There is no "job" more important on this planet than that of a mother.

Women are not equal to men and men are not equal to women. Everyone has their role, their strengths and weaknesses. No one gender is better than the other. Some feminists believe they need to reject the core of what makes a woman a woman and try to emasculate men of what comes naturally.

There are also historians who say that an African man who was Muslim travelled between the Americas and Africa hundreds of years before Columbus. Seems the Muslims ruled the world.

Everyone knows that both Columbus and Zheng He, as well as those imaginary Muslims, were beaten to the Americas by some Norwegian bloke named Leif Eriksson and his merry bunch of Vikings. ;)
