I work in health insurance and many group plans (through an employer) no longer have a pre-existing condition clause. But...with that being said, all companies and plans are different so I would definitely call the insurance company and find out what rules they go by.

Technically she's likely 3-4 weeks pregnant in medical terms. The counting of weeks begins on the first day of her last period, not conception. So your wait time is a little less to see an OB than expected. There's lots of things to consider ie: are you set with using an OB or would you consider a midwife? Is home birth an option? Are there any health reasons why this could be a high risk birth (ie. health reasons, age, etc). Lots to think of.

I'm not an expert so if I'm wrong I'd gladly be wrong on this one. My only concern about you starting a health plan in a month is that this may be deemed a pre existing condition and not be covered. I really hope that this is wrong as it seems wrong.

Base on the income you might be qualify for some health insurance through the Obama Care. So check out the market place on yours state to see if you qualify for the subsidy.

Insurance companies are no longer allowed to have a pre-existing condition exculsion thanks to the Affordable Care Act, AKA Obamacare.

too bad you cant move to Tennessee. We had CoverKids, and that is who my wife used when pregnant. It paid 100% of all costs.

Get "obamacare".,.,. it covers everything and no charge, and saves you 2500. a year, and ""you can keep your doctor"".,.,..,.,and guess what, ""YOU can keep your health care provider!!!""

Maybe something is there for you to help your situation, hope so for the baby's sake!

If you've just moved back and under your circumstances, chances are she might qualify for MA. Call your county DHS and inquire about MA for pregnant women.

Also, can we quit calling health insurance "obamacare"? It's not. It's just fkin health insurance.

State insurance pays for everything. If a woman is pregnant she automaticaly qualifies for health insurance and wic. All you have to do is take her to their office. They do the test to confirm pregnancy and thats all. She gets insurance. Once the baby is born they transfter ins to the baby for up to 5 years and wic too.

Dont be a fool and buy insurance. Trust me they will cover her. So apply.

I made a lot of money. My ex husband did too. We both had insurance. But i applied through state. And they paid all.

smh

You do not automatically "get" coverage. Medical Assistance (MA, Medicaid) is based on income and assets. For pregnant women, the asset qualification is waived. However, you must qualify based on income, and that qualification is based on family size.

If you work for a large (50+ employees) employer, it is likely that your health plan covers pregnancy. Prior to the Affordable Care Act, pre-existing conditions could be excluded unless you had uninterrupted coverage in the past. That's probably not the case anymore, although I'm not positive.

It won't be a major hardship if your health plan doesn't kick in for a few weeks.

Thank you for all your advice.

Check with your employer's insurance, usually they have a website, to see what the coverage for a pregnancy is. It varies from company to company and plan to plan as to what you will have to pay and who you can see and where you can deliver.

This was probably the best. Probably should have sat down all calm like and read through the policy but instead came here frantic.

We read through the policy and pregnancy is covered, is not considered a pre-existing consition and does not have an exclusion period. So we are confident we will be covered. The only remaining issue is that I start employment on the Dec 1st and my policy will start "the first month following your full time employment" so I'm gonna try and work something out so that, hopefully, we can start the policy on Dec 1.

One thing the OP's wife can do is to take prenatal vitamins if she hasn't already. Depending on the wife's age (26 or under), and if her parents are still working with medical insurance she could be covered under their in the mean time.

She has been taking the vitamins. This pregnancy wasn't unplanned, it just happened immediately and right in our insurance transition.

don't worry I have an idea for you, first wait for 2 or 3 months to go to Health Department at your county, there is some social workers they will help for pregnant women apply Medicaid if not you pay for some hundreds to see the doctors and test or ultrasounds until you born baby and then the day you are in The hospital there is financial department worker will come to see you and guide you how to apply emergency Medicaid after that you can apply emergency Medicaid and your baby automatic have Medicaid a year. Believe me I was born two kids without payment for hospital fee. Conglations for new baby, relax to take care yourself

I'm not sure this is an option. I am employed and there are income limitations are there not?

All else aside, WOW, the cost. Even with my employer subsidizing the insurance the premium is 20x our subsidized premium in New Zealand and still 5x un-subsidized. It's looking like, even with the insurance, we would be MUCH better financially (though not better for us) to send her back to New Zealand for the birth. It's pretty tough on the low to middle class but I guess that's just the way it is.
