First let me say thanks to everyone on this site. So far it has been a huge help.

We are ready to send off our AOS application, just needed to wait until I could file this years taxes so that I could prove that I make enough money to support my new wife. (In 2005 I made less than $10K as a student). My wife worked all last year on a J1 visa. I have found evidence which says that as my wife, she can file separately as a non-resident or jointly with me as a resident. If we file jointly, the return is slightly better. However, if I understand things correctly, filing joinly and changing her status to resident alien would open her up to having to pay Medicare and Social Security for 2006; this could be a several thousand dollar hit. Does anyone have experience with this? We will file separately just to play it safe, but I am curious to hear if my worry is correct.

Thank you,

Tim
