Hello Minnesotans!

I got R an appointment (a week after he gets here!) to take the road and knowledge tests to get a license. The lady told me all he needs is his passport and proof of his legal status (i.e. the K visa in his PP). She said no social security number was required.

This sounds fishy to me. Are there really no other requirements? It seems like people in other states can't get licenses unless they've AOS'd or something... can someone please verify this?

Thanks guys!

PS he had a license in Brazil, so he won't need to do the learner's permit thing, according to both the lady on the phone and the MN DMV web site. But could a K visa really be enough? The JFK temp work auth?

The website is built weird so I downloaded the pdf with requirements:

http://www.dmv.org/mn-minnesota/apply-license.php

Look under the section "Applying for a New License" for the link to an advertisement ... then the pdf.

I've attempted to add the pdf. Hope it works.

Wow thanks. I didn't even find that. It looks like with his translated birth certificate and I-94 he should be good to go. Why would Minnesota be so much easier than other states? Has anyone been through this?

Excerpt from the pdf:

If you do not have one of the items listed above, you must present one primary and one secondary document. The primary document

must contain your full name and the month, day, and year of your birth. Any document not in English must be accompanied by a

qualified English translation.

.....

If you are a temporary United States resident, you may need to show additional proof of your lawful admission period, such as a

form I-20, DS-2019, I-797, or other official immigration document or receipt.

Check to see if these items apply or other apply. You should have some of these documents as part of the visa packet.

Under the Pirmary document:

Valid, unexpired passport from a country other than the U.S. with an unexpired I-94 form or with an unexpired I-551 stamp.

And for the secondary document:

Certified birth certificate from a government jurisdiction other than the U.S., the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

or soon to be ...

Certified government-issued marriage certificate.

Hope this helps.

Please check back with DMV to validate.

YMMV

This sounds easy compared to TX.

I moved to TX and applied for my DL a few months back and afterwords felt I just had my annual physical

HA. Yeah and other people in other states complain of not being eligible for one until they have a GC or something? Wha? Good ol' Minnesota. We don't overthink things up here. :)

Minnesota is pretty chill. It's the only state in the Union that I can think of that allows people to wear baseball caps on their drivers license.

Now, if only they were so chill about registering cars. My parents gave us a car as a wedding present, since we eloped and saved them a ton of money on a wedding. My dad wrote "present" in the sale section, and they wouldn't accept it. Dur.
