The Official Outrage Over Obama Immigration Reform thread

I tend to agree with most of that. My whole point (before this got all sidetracked in to a discussion about private prisons) is why are these people getting a break? Seems they should worry about USCs first. There's plenty of citizen children having a rough time because of decisions their parents made. Where's Obama's executive action for them? That's his premise for a lot of this.

This whole thing is a move to enlarge the base of the Democrat party. Nothing more, nothing less. It was done for PURELY political reasons. If he wanted to take these "courageous" steps, he would've done it prior to the election. The Democrat candidates in the mid terms begged him not to do this prior to the election. He agreed to that. Why? Because he knows how unpopular this decision is. He doesn't care. He pretty much sealed Mary Landrieu's fate with this decree. She asked him to wait until after her runoff, and he gave her the big middle finger. Just like he did to everyone that went through the immigration process the legal way.

i guess i just figure the majority of government action is driven by politics and politicians want to keep their jobs. i don't really look at the imigration initiatives from the perspective of what obama or the democratic party stand to gain. i also don't look at it from the perspective that illegals don't deserve to be here or all people with the money to pay for a visa automatically deserve to be here either. honestly i always end up in the same place, thinking how stupid it is that people have to pay money and file forms to cross imaginary lines on a planet we all inhabit in order to be with the people they love. and then i go off into my own little anarchist hippie daydream ..

Right on. I can respect that. I disagree with it, but I see where you're coming from. Who knows what would happen if they just did away with borders? I suspect it would be chaos, but really who knows?

it would be awesome if this reform draws enough attention immigration that legal immigration gets the attention it needs. but awesome is a tall order.

Senator Cornyn's office said they can't help me because my application is still under 1 year with USCIS. Dems and Repubs are just jokes. They help no one but themselves

Neither side cares about legal immigration. There's no political points to be scored, and that's what its all about. It's flat out silly that it takes a year to get a spouse here. I think it takes roughly 30 days in the EU, and they have an allegedly huge bureaucracy.

It's the sad reality.

ETA: in 2014 it shouldn't take a year to do anything. Leave it up to the govt. to turn a simple thing into something overly complicated.

that's the raw deal of your particular senator, unfortunately. i had to contact mark warner's office to get information regarding our ap, and i was helped immediately. i signed a waiver from their office and that was it - i had a means of contact with the montreal embassy. i wasn't told i had to wait a year..

i feel for you, really. i wish there was some way i could help. i mean you've got all my empathy but at the end of the day all the empathy in the world doesn't trump the system..

I know. What a year while millions just gained automatic relief.

My Congressman at the time was very helpful, too. As was then Senate majority leader Bill Frist.

Right, it's not much. But it gives these people firstly some peace of mind that they're not going to be put into deportation proceedings so long as they haven't racked up a criminal background and secondly, it will give them an opportunity to legally work and support their families. And that to those that benefit is worth a lot. As a husband and father, I can understand why.

99.99999% of them wouldn't be put in deportation proceedings anyway.

There are probably a lot of people locked up for minor, non-violent offenses that should be afforded relief as well. But then there are the prison corporations that need to look out for the shareholders.

I think you meant to say that there are a lot of people locked up who violated laws that carry a jail sentence if convicted and said people knew the consequences of their actions.

Then what's the big deal? What's the outrage? What you're saying then is that Obama has effectively done nothing at all.

No, I think I meant to say exactly what I actually said.

The problem is what will come next, nothing has changed from yesterday to today. Except that people south of the border heard amnesty and are packing their bags as we speak.

And you think that people who knowingly broke the law and were sentenced according to the law shouldn't be in prison in the cases where you feel it is inappropriate? No wonder you worship Obama.
