I've never understood terms such as "trainers" for running/athletic shoes-sneakers (what am I training for?) or "jumper" for "sweater" (do I have to be jumping to wear one?)

Trainers = training (running or something), and no you dont have to be jumping to wear a jumper, but you do have to be sweating to wear a sweater......lol

I really don't get sneakers - because what are you doing in them? Sneaking around? I've always thought to myself it's because the rubber soles make them quieter then hard soled shoes.

Trainers = training (running or something

I guess that would make sense if I were an athlete training for an event, but to call running that is merely for exercise or enjoyment "training" just seems odd... "training" also makes me think of a bicycle with "training wheels;" eventually the training wheels come off once the child learns how to ride. So, it sounds like the "trainers" are for learning something and will be replaced with the "real thing" later

Precisely  If you want to sneak up on someone, you want to wear sneakers :P

I used to call dinner 'tea' when I was younger. Settee and toilet. Although I do now say bathroom when I'm out somewhere now to avoid people looking at me strangely..

When I was in the UK, we were at a Chinese restaurant, and I asked the lady where the bathroom was...she was all 'no bath in toilet!' or something like that, it was funny.

Also, I call the item of clothing on the top part of my body a 'top', not a shirt like I've heard here. A shirt has a collar and buttons. Not all tops are called tops obviously, some are jumpers...
