I used to call dinner 'tea' when I was younger. Settee and toilet. Although I do now say bathroom when I'm out somewhere now to avoid people looking at me strangely..

When I was in the UK, we were at a Chinese restaurant, and I asked the lady where the bathroom was...she was all 'no bath in toilet!' or something like that, it was funny.

That's why I stopped saying anything other than restroom - my mom asked where the washroom was before and someone said "there's a sink over there if you want to wash your hands" -- it was like they thought she wanted to do laundry or something

I know for my mom's family in Wyoming, the farmers anyways, it's different. If memory serves they have supper for their mid-day meal. I always thought of supper as dinner, though I never used the word supper myself. Dinner is the evening meal. Supper is... some word other people use for unknown reasons.

Isn't there an actual difference between a couch and a sofa?

I know what a couch is but isn't the word sofa short for sleeper sofa?

Dinner, Pop, Bathroom (restroom is appropriate when out, like in restaurants, places with no 'bath' in, but I probably call it Bathroom anyhow), Couch. Southwest Ohio.

Well, where Im from, it's always Brekkie= Breakfast

Arve, is afternoon.. So, I'd always say, I'll be home tomorrow arve if you want to come over etc.

Its the Couch, or lounge, not a Sofa, or settee, or anything else,..

And its Softdrink, not Soda, or Pop...

And it's lollies, not candy.

And Toilet, not Bathroom

Now Im with hubby, I say Soda, Bathroom, Candy etc etc...

*sigh*, feels like I lost a part of me, having to learn to speak all over again...

I do slip up occasionally, but Hubby has learnt, and knows what I say, and mean...he actually says its endearing, he also says I shouldnt try to change for anyone....as far as speech is concerned, or what I call things,...

I just did it to fit in really,..

My husband and his family have dinner, drink pop (or sometimes softdrinks when in a more formal environment) and sit on both, a couch and a sofa

"Soda," never "pop."

"Couch" or "sofa" (a "sofa-bed" is one kind of sofa, not the long form of "sofa")

Evening meal is "dinner," though occasionally I might use "supper," such as a "soup supper"

"Evening" is after sunset, or 6pm, whichever comes first.

I've never understood terms such as "trainers" for running/athletic shoes-sneakers (what am I training for?) or "jumper" for "sweater" (do I have to be jumping to wear one?)

I used to say "bathroom," but now it is "restroom" or "washroom", the latter from Lai and visits to Hong Kong. "Bathroom" now seems crude to me, from the way it was used in my family as a kid....it is too close to "going to the bathroom," which was the way we referred to the actual act of elimination: "What are you doing in there?" "Going to the bathroom."
