We had a heart to heart today. He decided to resign from his job. I mentioned going to school for a skilled trade and he said he would consider it.

He is tired of the long hours, weekend schedules and low pay. He told me he's afraid to enter into a new trade because he will most likely be surrounded by Americans and he is embarrassed of his English. He has no reason to be. He has excellent proficiency in English and most people can understand him just fine. His weakness is writing which I am working with him on. But it's a step in the right direction. I am going to keep an eye out for job fairs and we will be looking at certification programs after the holidays.

That is great news. It seems like your husband has self esteem issues. I have worked with people that barely speak English, yet they are in high management positions. Your husband will be fine.

Plumber and electricians are always popular and needed trades.

This times a thousand. My stepfather is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. It's a union in both Canada AND the US. The average age of a union electrician has risen drastically in the past fifteen years. I seem to recall that the average age is somewhere around or above fifty now and they're looking for intelligent new apprentices in virtually every area. Plus, electricians are REALLY cool people. If I were physically stronger, I would join the union and become an electrician, but unfortunately I can't get strong enough to pull cable. It's not that you have to be huge and burly, it's that I'm just really weak.

Met in 2010 on a forum for a mutual interest. Became friends.
2011: Realized we needed to evaluate our status as friends when we realized we were talking about raising children together.

2011/2012: Decided we were a couple sometime in, but no possibility of being together due to being same sex couple.

June 26, 2013: DOMA overturned. American married couples ALL have the same federal rights at last! We can be a family!

June-September, 2013: Discussion about being together begins.

November 13, 2013: Meet in person to see if this could work. It's perfect. We plan to elope to Boston, MA.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone! I really like the HVAC, electrician, skilled trades suggestions. I've bounced all of these ideas off of my husband and he seems excited that there are so many opportunities for him.
Now that his weekends will be free, I plan on getting him involved with more social activities. In India, he was always surrounded by people and I can understand how lonely he must feel. It's been a tough year transitioning for him but I'm confident that he can get through this

I am the petitioner.

Find Indian community and gatherings, www.eknazar.com/ is a good place to look for Indian events in your city. Yes I am from India and I learned the first part of the Driving course online, through free resources. My husband taught me some, and then I had an Indian instructor who helped with my driving test part and I passed, but with a lot of practise. Eknazar may have some Indian driving instructor advertisements. Hope it helps
