Haha, thanks for asking. It was surprisingly intense, prolonged and unsatisfying.

The officer asked me to swear to tell the truth as soon as I got through the door, which I did, including her first question "did you study for the citizenship test." I truthfully answered "no," which seemed to annoy her. She rattled off six questions fast, all softballs:

What does the cabinet do?

If neither the President nor VP can serve, who becomes President?

We elect a U.S. Senator for how many years?

How many justices are on the Supreme Court?

What did the Declaration of Independence do?

Name one branch of government.

She made a big deal out of me not having any bills or other paperwork showing that my wife resided at the same address as me. I kept pointing at the stack of tax docs in front of her, which included our 2014 joint return, listing us both as living at the same address. The fact that I had my wife's actual passport with me didn't seem to mean anything, because apparently I could have stolen it. Eventually she seemed to relent, but with a great deal of reluctance.

Then she asked me a LOT of questions about my application and background, including ALL of the ones about participating in genocide, persecuting minorities, advocating the overthrow of any government, being a Communist etc. Things got really sticky when she got to the question in which I'd answered that I was unwilling to take the full Oath of Allegiance. I explained it in a supplement to the application, but she seemed to be baffled by the idea that anyone would refuse to speak the words "so help me God." She peppered me with questions until I pointed out that there's a clear USCIS directive on the subject, at which point she insisted on reading the entire Oath of Allegiance and pausing after each clause to ask if I had any problem with it. In the questions that followed she asked me TWICE if I'd ever persecuted anyone because of their religion, despite having ALREADY asked me that question. Pretty hostile stuff.

The English test ("Citizens can vote") was last, then she printed off the sheet saying that I'd past the tests. She said that I'd receive a decision in the mail. I asked if that meant that a decision couldn't be made today and she said that that was correct (strangely the box on the sheet stating that language isn't checked). I asked why not and she said that it was standard for the application to be reviewed before a final determination. She said that that's by far the most frequent outcome for younger people, which wasn't the impression I'd received from all of your experiences. Now I'll just have to wait and see what the letter says.

Pretty odd, and now I'm more eager than ever to be done with it all.

Lauder,

I think your interview went very well.

Congratulations in advance.

Did you by chance ask her when the next swearing ceremony will be?

I hope everything goes on well and we get to meet at the naturalization ceremony.

Again, congrats and best wishes to us.

Well thank you, you seem to be more confident than me. I didn't ask about ceremonies because she made a point of telling me that I wouldn't receive the written decision for up to 4 months; she actually made me repeat "four months" back to her (although she did say I'd "probably" get it within 2 weeks).

Pooh007 how did your interview go? What was the experience like in NYC?

The interview experience was not good on for me and I am not happy about that.

Firstly, I spent nearly 3 hours waiting for my name to be called.

I listened to Lauder and brought a book but I got tired of reading.

She quickly went through the N400 application questions.

My questions:

Name one of the longest rivers in the US?

When was the declaration of independence?

Who is the Chief Justice of the US now?

What do we call the first ten amendments?

We elect president for how many years?

Then, she asked for more evidence. I gave her our jointly filed federal and state taxes for 4 years and many other documents.

After reviewing them, she said that she needed more evidence that a decision cannot be made today.

I asked further, and she said she was done with me.

I was really devastated.

I still hope and pray for the best.

2015 US Passport Application Tracker List

Hi everyone! I had my interview yesterday, and my experience was very positive. I arrived at 9:00 a.m. for my 9:30 a.m. interview. I waited (maybe) 15 minutes before my number was called. The lady who interviewed me was very pleasant and polite. She swore me in, and then we jumped to the test.

My questions:

1) Who is the governor of Illinois?

2) What is the capital of Illinois?

3) What is one promise you make when you become a U.S. citizen?

4) Who was the first President?

5) Name the U.S. War between North and the South?

6) What movement tried to end racial discrimination?

I was asked to read the sentence, "Who lives in the White House" and write, "The President lives in the White House." We quickly went through my application. She did not ask to see any of the documents I've brought with me (other than my IDs and passport), she said I had sent them all that they needed. After asking me to sign some papers, she said that she was recommending me for approval and that I will be receiving the Oath schedule in the mail in the next few weeks.

Question: I've read in some threads that some are asked to sign at the back of the pictures that they have mailed in with their original packet. I was not asked to do so during the interview. Is that a problem?

Oh! I was also reminded not to say that I'm a citizen until after the oath. :) Thanks, and good luck to all those who are going through the same thing.

2015 US Passport Application Tracker List

Posted

I had my marriage-based N400 interview today at Phoenix office. My experience was really pleasant. Officer asked me:

What is freedom of religion?

How many senators are there?

What is the ocean on the east side?

When must men to register for selective service?

When was the Constitution written?

Which state borders with Canada?

She asked me to read "Who is on the dollar bill?"

She asked me to write "The flag is red, blue and white."

When she went over my application, she asked to see my passport to verify dates. She asked if my spouse was accompanied with me on trips, and why not? She never asked for any documents else, I brought a whole package but she only wanted to see my passport. She then printed a lot of papers and told me to sign and verify my address info so they could mail Oath mail within 2 - 4 weeks. I saw her stamp "Approved" and write dates on my N400, and she put a sticker on my file. She gave me form N-652 with "Congratulations! We recommended your approval" marked. Now I am waiting for my online status to change. Good luck to all waiting, God bless you all.
