I have a quick question. Will i be getting a separate notice in the mail as to when my finger print (biometric) appointment is? how long after receiving the NOA do people get the print appointments? Thank you in advance.

The NOA and biometric appointment letters are different. For me - and I'm also in NYC so I'd imagine it'll be similar - the time between the two was only about a week. But I've heard of them getting sent late and arriving just before (or even after) the appointment in the letter. There was a woman behind me when I went for my appointment last Friday who'd received the biometric appointment after the date it was scheduled for. They just let her do it then instead. I turned up several hours early for mine and they didn't say anything. It's a pretty casual process.

thank you for answering my question, I shall keep an eye open for a letter coming in the mail in the next week or so. If it does not arrive within 2 weeks should I call to ensure i am at the appointment that I am suppose to be at?

I had my biometrics appointment 18 days after I received the NOA (I don't recall the date I received the appointment letter). Since you received the NOA yesterday, if you don't receive it a week from Monday I'd call them to check, but I'm certain it'll show up before then.

I actually got my biometrics letter almost 3 weeks after NOA, so you really don't have to worry!

Totally understandable; we're all going through the same thing so we know how frustrating the lack of clarity can be!

Something that might be useful for you, vwguy, and for others: the "rules" against cellphones at biometrics centers.

Like many of you, I've now had three biometric appointments (temporary green card, 10-year green card, naturalization). Each time, the appointment letter has stated that cellphones would be prohibited. Each of my appointments was in a different city (Chicago, Boston, New York City), since I've moved around a lot recently.

I'm a lawyer and I've practiced in a few federal courts that have very strict bans on cellphones in the building (although that never applies to lawyers). As a result, there's always a couple of bodegas and 7-Elevens nearby that offer really expensive phone storage. So I'm familiar with cellphone bans in some federal buildings. But for anyone who hasn't had their biometrics appointment yet, here's the important part:

Every time I've gone to a USCIS office, it's been clear that the rule against cellphones is absolutely not enforced.

In fact, every time the security guard at the entrance has told me (and everyone else) to make sure that phones are switched off (thus making it clear that their mere presence isn't an issue). Each time it's increased my anxiety, and finding that I left it at home for nothing has been really frustrating. In particular, my appointment in Chicago was right after I moved there and the USCIS center was in a remote neighborhood. I'd have really appreciated being able to use Google Maps when I left.

I can't promise that there are no USCIS centers that don't enforce the rule, but I think it's very likely that that part of the letter is just a hangover from a time before they were ubiquitous, and that it has no meaning anymore.

that is some good and useful information. When i took the NYPD test they said no cell phones, yet i was the only one without one. Everyone simply turned it off. I was a little frustrated when that happened. Nonetheless, i will more than likely leave the phone at home. I rather just not take the risk of them not allowing me access to the center because i have it with me.

Then I'm sure you know just how frustrating it is!

You really don't need to worry at the USCIS office on Varick St. When you enter the building you go through security. The guys checking the scanner and metal detector don't say anything about phones, and there's no signs posted there. Every single person in front of me put a phone in the tray to be scanned, and we were all there for the same reason. When I got upstairs to the biometrics waiting area (which doesn't require any additional scans), the guard said "make sure your phone is switched off." Not even "if you have a cellphone..."! I saw multiple people sitting there playing with their phones while they waited and nobody said a word.

The funny thing is I've taken two bar exams (Massachusetts and New York) and the rules for those are crazy strict (no labels on water bottles, earplugs can't be joined by a string, no digital watches, no mechanical pencils etc.) but I still had my phone in my pocket both times, just switched off. I only followed the rules for biometrics because the immigration process is so unclear and I couldn't find forums where people said not to worry about it.

Good info... especially for NYC applicants... here in Houston, my experience has been slightly different... I've gone in for biometrics 4 times... 3 at the Southwest Houston facility and 1 at the Southeast Houston facility... 1 time for my green card and 3 times for UK visas.

2 times I was asked if I had a phone and I said that I had left it in my car.

The other 2 times I was specifically told "If you have a phone, please take it out to your car" and 1 time while I was waiting, I heard the check-in guard ask an applicant to go back and put her phone in her car.

You have to realize though, that in Houston, it's very difficult to get anywhere without a car, let alone the Application Support Centers which are in the suburbs... so maybe it's different in a city like NYC where they understand that you don't have a convenient place to leave your things.

Really good point, JimmyHou. All of mine have been in places where most people would have to leave it at home and trek across a major city unguided. I can see how it would be different somewhere where everyone has a big locked box in a parking lot a two-minute walk away!

Hello, so we received our NOA on 01/12/15 and check was cashed on 01/05. The question I have is that, at the end of the NOA this is what it says,

" Upon receipt of all required record checks, you will be scheduled to appear for an interview at your local USCIS field office." Should it say that?

I thought fingerprints is the next step? Thoughts please. Thanks!

Biometrics are the next step, you're quite right. And yes, it should say that. The biometrics data they collect is used by the FBI to perform a background check; they run your image and fingerprints against nationwide arrest and person-of-interest records. So when the letter says "upon receipt of all required record checks," the FBI check is one of the checks they're talking about. Assuming it (and the other checks) comes back without an issue, USCIS will proceed and schedule your interview.

Hope that helps!
