I also saw the port congestion story today...big bummer. I sent out boxes in the middle of Oct and now we're thinking they won't get it till Jan or Feb. We used LBC all the way from Pennsylvania and going to Cebu. That in itself probably adds 3 weeks versus a California to Manila box.

Forex was supposed to be using two more ports to bring packages this year, rather than bringing everything through Manila. Apparently the port congestion has been a known issue for a while.

As long as items fit in the box is ok? What about the weight, is there a weight limit for a balikbayan box?

It's usually a flat rate for any weight, for boxes being shipped by sea.

We used LBC once, my in-laws several times. We haven't had any problems so far.

Is it better to have the box shipped or ask a relatives who's coming home to bring it with them? No idea how much they have to pay for the excess. Not sure what to send yet but I'm pretty sure they're hoping for a big box of goodies and bucks :P

excess baggage is truly prohibitively expensive. You're gonna pay by weight and possibly box size too. A balikbayan box is not withing the dimension restrictions.

Using Delta as an example.

To avoid extra charges for oversize or overweight baggage, your checked bag must:

  • weigh 50 pounds (23 kg) or less
  • not exceed 62 inches (157 cm) when you total length + width + height

If its a bag within those limits, then the fee is $150 for the third bag, and $200 for a 4th bag. This doesn't count the baggage fees for domestic flights within the Philippines.
