Social Security Card Issues

Hi, all.

Spouse entered on K1 in August. We got married, applied for AOS, employment authorization, and travel document. We also applied for and received a social security card. She already had her biometrics done at the local office. Since the card was issued in her maiden name, we returned to the social security office with all of our documentation to apply for a new card with her hyphenated name. The officer was hesitant, but spoke with her supervisor and processed it. She took the old SS card, wrote "VOID" in black marker, and kept it. Today, we received a notice that said the spouse's visa was expired and she could not receive a card. We are, obviously, a bit taken aback. Any advice on how to proceed?

I believe you will need the EAD in order to be able to change the name on an already-issued social security card for a K-1.

Yes, they verify the name in the SAVE system. It sounds like her I-94 expired and since she entered under her maiden name, that's still her official name in the system.

When she gets her EAD card, that's concrete proof that her name has been updated and she should be safe to go to the SSA office again to get a new SSN card.

I had my old SS on maiden name, needed to change it into married one. All you need (if I94 is expired) EAD card or GC, old SS card, and filled new SS card application.

Me personally had a bit of fight regarding name change, cos after having EAD AP card and going to the SS office (15 days after i got EAD AP cos i read its better to wait, so SS office can see you in the system under new name.....etc). so i went to SS and they could not see me in the system under married name, so.........i waited, came again, same story......... Finally I went to USCIS local office (did info pass) and they admitted that they forgot to update my last name.......so they did it (for that i showed them certified copy of marriage papers).......and in like few weeks SS could see me under married name.......

Conclusion: told my story for people to be aware of what may happen.......
