In Singapore, Most expats live in private condo with all the nice facilities and the rental is at least $4000 per month fully paid for by the employers.

So it is nice to live in Singapore with Expat package.

The locals do not have the luxury.

Private condo cost at least 1 million dollar upwards (small tiny box living space).

My hubs would never move to Singapore, given the high cost of livings.

Job wise, IT in Singapore is gradually outsourced to cheaper labor of 3rd world countries people who are using Singapore as stepping stone to earn $$ and then retire back home for cheaper living.

Singapore company would never pay my hubs the kind of money he is earning now in US.

If he gets expat package, then it would be another story.

Merrytooth - I didn't mean to offend you with that comment in the other thread - it was a response to the UK guy who wanted to come to America because the houses were bigger. Sorry if I did.

He seemed like the sort of guy who was looking for a fancy 'expat' experience rather than a realistic emigration.

And I am currently being bombarded on Facebook by friends Singapore adventures which look amazing and wonderful. I realise that is not a regular local experience.

I think with people who fetishize America, there can be some disappointments, but I have to say that my British family has done well here, going from council houses to being to able to own their own houses, cars, etc. Housing prices in England right now are super out of control, as I'm sure you've noticed.

Upsides and downsides to everywhere.

:pop: I actually know some Danes who'd do anything to move to America. That I'm not sure I get, but people got to dream, I suppose.

Every country has its dark side ;)

Different experiences when one really living in it, compare to just peeking through the window.

i don't know about merry, but i certainly was not offended. amused, more like it.

there is a lot of talk about people fetishizing america - how it's the land of golden opportunity, etc. people fetishize singapore too. the truth is, being an expat is like having a very long, extended holiday. you never see the big picture.

one of my old friends, he came in as an expat maybe 25 years ago, now he's a citizen. he used to live the 'expat' life, loved it so much he decided to give up his nationality and get singapore citizenship. today, he lives in a public housing apartment, can't afford a new car once his certificate of entitlement expires next year and faces the same problems locals have. he doesn't seem to hang out with his expat friends anymore either because they have either gone home, or have a different standard of life than he.

FWIW, it's extremely hard to get expat packages now. people are losing interest in expensive caucasian labour when they can get asian 'foreign talent' for cheap(er).

nola, i decided to move to the US because without a university degree, jonas is not going to have an easy time finding a job in singapore. that was the deciding factor for us.
