all those pictures of houses...i have a sudden urge to play the sims and create some overly ostentatious mansions for fake sim people.

IMO, real estate in the US is dirt cheap. my parents' home in singapore is valued around the same price as some of the ones you guys have been linking and it is nowhere near as fancy or large as those houses. even here in seattle, where real estate prices are off the charts, i can get a decent two bedroom condo with a mortgage lower than $1000/month. in singapore, i can't even rent a decent room close to town for that price.

The salaries are higher though, aren't they?

i don't know enough about salaries across professions and qualifications to make an accurate comparison. i made more in singapore than i am making now, but at the same time, my job scope is vastly different. one thing though, singapore has no minimum wage, so when i was cashiering part time as a student, i made $5/hr. my coworkers who earned the same were married, with kids. i have no idea how, after bills, diapers, etc, they had anything left over to buy food and eat. but somehow, they did.

if you buy a public housing apartment, you can opt for insurance that ensures if you or your spouse dies, the remainder of the loan is forgiven. when my uncle died, my aunt sold her apartment for about $350,000 USD and moved to malaysia. but, too bad she squandered away her money, and is back to penny pinching again.

Hmmm... that is interesting. I think a lot of minimum wage earners in America probably couldn't make it without government assistance either.

The wealth gap is pretty big over there. Space is the biggest problem.
