Troph are you using water based? If yes, are you using Benjamin Moore?

If not, there's your problem.

I've actually used Benjamin Moore a ton as it was the only thing besides Sherwin Williams my mother would use. The expensive Valspar does a better job for wall coverage, no joke. It did a great job with the trim in the house that has already been painted too. It is just this raw wood and the house is super dry. I'd same the Benjamin Moore and Valspar are about even on trim coverage.

Anyway, my husband thinks it is because I don't over slop it on with the first coat, but if I do that I get drips...

Haha and why not. Much easier!

You waste your time painting, waiting for it to dry, paint again, wait again, cut, scratch and scuff it, all this time the stuff is in your way, and collecting dust, put it up, and sand and paint again. Good thing you're not in the construction business......

You didn't prime the wood?

Lemme ask you this, did you prime it? Or are you using a self priming paint? I'm being it's the latter.....

You didn't prime the wood?

Hey I said that first!

You cut it before hand silly. And you paint it while someone else paints the walls drying time is nothing. Why the heck would I sand it and paint it again???

It is the later. My family has had painters for generations, they taught me how to paint and we don't usually prime wood that has been stained, but sanded. Fresh wood yes, stained wood, no. Maybe it is just a my family thing.

Either way, I'd still need to do it 3 times.

Because you'll scuff it while making, and there'll be adjustment cuts. Go find me 1 DIY site that says to paint before install.

Troph, next time use Benjamin

I really don't like it and it is not as good as the Valspar.

You can't paint stained wood with water base. You need oil base.

Well sorry my father never looked at a diy site heck he wouldn't know how to find one. That is what he has always done, measure twice cut once works well with him.

I'm not basing it on DIY, not ragging on you dad. But doing it that way is really more work in the long run, and not practical in large projects.
