:ranting::ranting: So our flu and the the fireplace area of our "heatilator" is intact, but it is rusted to high heaven on the top vent part that technically shouldn't come into contact with any fumes from the fireplace (it is just circulating the room air).

But, to take the damn thing out requires completely destroying our chimney and fireplace and would cost a fortune. From some poking around, it seems, that we should cut out what we can and do an insert (gas or wood) and run a liner up the fireplace.

Ignore the fact that we are in the middle of painting/renovating.

I had the stainless steel insert done in my other house, 4000 bucks.....

I'm betting it'll be more like $6000-7000 unless we do some of it ourselves. It is expensive getting work done here. Might just not use it for a while. Where it is in the house, it'll never be for anything more than for pretties anyway. They bricked over the useful one in the center of the house. :sleepy:

Trophie! Just get your kid to climb into the chimney and then do what this kid did. They took apart the fireplace for free !
