Again, it's arrogant nonsense of this sort that will ensure that the war on terrorism in general and the war on Iraq in particular is a failure. You can't make allies of a people if you keep explaining to them publicly time and again that their lives are worth less than ours. Which is all that nonsensical Rovian catch-phrase really does.

And again, repeating this empty phrase doesn't answer the question why we didn't take them on in Afghanistan where they were in the first place. Why Iraq? One of the few countries in the region that wasn't in bed with these radical elements.

The people of PI know especially the workings of these types of people. Just go to Manila. The country has been overrun with these radicals. You can't even go to the mall there without being stared at by these groups. Not to mention the designated prayer sections that are sectioned off in the middle of the flippin mall. Now that was 3 years ago, but I am certianly sure they are worse now. This use to be a 98% Catholic country. Not anymore.

There is a fairly substantial difference between Political Correctness and dishonesty based on ignorance. Lumping all the problems in the middle-east together under one big comfortable umbrella of islamic extremism/islamofascism (or whatever this week's buzz word for it is) strikes me as the latter. The fact is the current problems are many and various and are caused by disparate groups, factions and individuals fighting for different causes, and standing for conflicting ideologies.

Unfortunately there is a racist dimension to this - when I was growing up in Britain you didn't see commentators and members of the public blaming, for example, the people of Ireland for all the problems in North. The focus was quite rightly on the IRA and the other paramilitary groups. Makes me wonder why we aren't prepared to do the same for residents of middle-eastern countries. Seems we haven't progressed very far from medieval times when people with more imagination than sense wrote "Here be dragons" across huge swathes of unexplored territory.

The comment about Germany is interesting, and wrong. Germany declared war on the US, not the other way around. Matter of debate what would have happened if they had not.

Saddam was very effective at keeping the lid on the nasties, they were a threat to his regieme and any that came his way had a very short life expectancy.

Seems a lot of the right wing commentators now acknowledge Iraq was a mistake - O'Reilly etc, question is now what do you do.

US strategy, if there is one, is puzzling to say the least. IF the stated aims are true then there would need to several hundred thousand extra troops deployed, not 21,000. I can not believe that the senior Military commanders do not fully appreciate what the situation is.

My guess - tokenistic increase for a few months to allow some excuse for subsequent retreat - sorry redeployment, later this year - time will tell.

US Military can not defend its own borders, Iraq with limited forces is a big big step too far.
