i didn't say they'll strike because i don't support our president. i was more open ended on that answer ;)

Well, in copa there is always something going on, but there is always someone wanting to rob you in some corner...

It is a bad bad city to be a foreigner...

Even if you are not. I was on the beach with alex and this guy that was selling some ###### wouldn't believe I was Brazilian. I mean, holy ignorance Batman!

As for Bush, his days are counted and now that he doesn't have the congress America will be a better place to live...

i saw so many policemen on/around copacabana beach i thought there was a convention for cops there. yeah we had people trying to sell us ####### too. some group came by and sang a song for us. i gave them a pack of mentos that i had

bush's days have always been counted since his 2nd term ;)

Fixed!

On a serious note, most of us (US citizens) here have traveled outside the US. I traveled to the Philippines before and after the Iraq war. Do you feel more safe now or then? Maybe it's just in my head but I felt more safe before the war. It's unpopular in the US and even less popular outside. I avoid political discussions when I'm abroad but if I'm forced into a discussion I make it clear that while I'm an American I'm not in support of Bush or the Iraq war.

Bush went in under the pretense bad intel that Iraq had WMD's and 9/11 involvement and he did so without the approval of the UN and had mild allied support.

now it's accurate.

The barstards stole my camera. The police are as bad as the criminals. The more time I spent in Rio the less I liked it, although I was in love with it for awhile. Now I can't stand the majority of the city. I hate seeing the dollar signs in everyone's eyes when they see me in the tourist parts of town.

You were there for a short time. the cops also planted coke and marijuana on my gringo friends three times while I was there. Then they make you pay them at least 100 bucks so they don't take you to jail for possession. Charles, as an American, you would have been the target. Youre just lucky you were with a Brazilian.

all intel is selective. there's so much of it one has to look for a common thread. also note that other countries intel services supported the conclusion they had wmd's ;)

True, but there was opposition (inside and outside the US) to going in, especially without UN consent. And not all countries agreed on the WMD conclusion or there wouldn't have been opposition.

I'll agree with you there. And there's always self-interests that add to the bias factor.

But I didn't hear any outcry here in the US about what went on in Africa. More like, 'can't see it from my house'.

I was watching a documentary last night about a 17 year old who killed a man, claiming self-defense, and it was brought up that even in self defense, killing is not always legally allowed. Thought this was interesting and compared it for a moment to the contrast our policies have with regards to war, so I'm thinking how would all of this stack up if it went to a U.S court house:

Self-Defense (source)

A person claiming self-defense must prove at trial that the self-defense was justified. Generally a person may use reasonable force when it appears reasonably necessary to prevent an impending injury. A person using force in self-defense should use only so much force as is required to repel the attack. Nondeadly force can be used to repel either a nondeadly attack or a deadly attack. Deadly force may be used to fend off an attacker who is using deadly force but may not be used to repel an attacker who is not using deadly force.

In some cases, before using force that is likely to cause death or serious bodily harm to the aggressor, a person who is under attack should attempt to retreat or escape, but only if an exit is reasonably possible. Courts have held, however, that a person is not required to flee from his own home, the fenced ground surrounding the home, his place of business, or his automobile.

Use of deadly force is never justified to protect personal property other than a dwelling. For example, a person would not be justified in shooting a person who is taking an automobile, no matter how expensive. Reasonable nondeadly force may be used to protect such personal property.

A person may use force to defend a third person from attack. If the defender is mistaken, however, and the third party does not need assistance, most jurisdictions hold that the defender may be held liable in civil court for injuries inflicted on the supposed attacker. In criminal cases a defendant would be relieved of liability if she proved she had made a reasonable mistake.

The intel was dressed up to support the goal of going into Iraq. There's no clearer piece of evidence than that of the testimony of one Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi - an Al-Oaede operative - which was more valuable to W than the analysis of the DIA regarding that specific testimony. The Saddam - AlQaeda link was constructed and publicly supported on numerous occasions by the President on that particular testimony that the DIA had dismissed as nonsense. Bush trusted the word of the enemy over the evaluation of the Intelligence Agency in order to beef up the case for war. He cannot stand there blaiming he was misled by the intelligence community if he wants to be taken seriously.
