How 'bout studying some Candian history with him? On one of my visits to my fiancee we took a tour of a museum dedicated to the history of confederation of the provinces. She lives on PEI, home of confederation, and I thought it was really neat to learn something about how her country came into existence. Speaking from my own personal experience, Candian history is something I know very little about, so the more I learn of her country's history, the closer I feel to her.

Well with the peirogies (introduced to me in Canada by my girlfriend at the time who had a stron Ukranian background), a lot of Ukranian decents here make them too. A number of my coworkers even told me you can even get the frozen kind at the grocery store, and sure enough there they are, the same pretty much as the fozen kind I got in Canada.

I guess it just depends if you're in a highly Ukranian/Polish immigrant area or not if you can get better ones, but all the regular chain grocery stores I think pretty much carry them if you like that.

I just boil them, plop them in butter with green onions and salt and there's my pierogie dinner already made...

For me, part of feeling 'at home' here is feeling comfortable in and familiar with my surroundings. Just getting to know the area will make him feel more at home. Share what you love about your home with him. If he is the type to get homesick, then make a plan for a visit home so that he has a sense of when he will see friends and family again.

Get a tourist book for your closest large city (or yours if it's large), he or the both of you can go out exploring.

That's so funny - When I 1st came to Oregon (right before I met my husband) I was being wheeled by this fellow that said he "likes guns"! It was hilarious. Good thing I met my husband right after that because I woulda had some very scary dreams for the rest of my life! Oops,

Great ideas Carrie. Gene took down pictures, and got his hammer and nails out to help me hang my pictures since I've been down. Making the "spare" bathroom mine with all my favourite scents, candles etc. was very special. He also has hung two very special pictures he took while in Saskatchewan, of the prairies, and framed them and put them in the bathroom.
