How do you get your case number from NVC?

Before they mail the letter from the national visa center to you, how do you get the case number from them? Can you call them? If so, what is the phone number?

I think I was late filing for AOS:

07/27/07: Mailed AOS papers to Chicago mailbox.

08/02/07: AOS papers received in Chicago.

you can call them at "603-334-0700" or email them at "NVCINQUIRY@STATE.GOV"

when you call, you can either talk to the customer service personnel or go through the automated computer system and tell them about your "receipt number" that you got for your I130 or I129f. the computer will then tell you if NVC has received your application and assigned a case number.
