I'm sorry but this comment makes you seem heartless. Her mother ended up in the Hospital no one to care for her so she went back home to care for her. She may not be on her death bead but wouldn't you want help when you're old from your family?

Personally things are too fresh I would give it some time. Get mom stable again and hire a nurse so your wife feels better and can think clearly.

I agree, and have thought about that often. How can one be upset with their wife for this commitment? And yes, I always think about how lucky I would be for my two grown daughters to be there even a fraction of the time my wife is with her mother.

Marriage is for better or for worse. Family is family. I went home overseas for 8 months to take care of my mother when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. I wasn't married at the time, but I think I would have done the same if I was - she's my only mother and it was my duty and privilege to take care of her before she died.

Different situation in that your MIL isn't going to die imminently, and that must be the hardest thing for her and for you - there's no end in sight. Only you can decide what you want to do. I think it's unfair to assume she doesn't love you enough to leave her mum or that she intentionally changed her plans.

COPD can last for many years before someone passes away. My mother got it at age 55, and lived until she was 73. She had it close to 19 years. His wife can make the choice of living her marriage with her husband, or taking care of her mother, but the marriage is likely to wither and die. Its one thing when someone has a terminal illness that will kill them, and completely another when they have a chronic condition that will likely eventually kill them, but can be lived with for many years.

Yeah I think that's exactly what I just said:

"Different situation in that your MIL isn't going to die imminently, and that must be the hardest thing for her and for you - there's no end in sight."

the OP presented the option for the MIL to live in the United States and the MIL refused.
