Hi,

Just curious what the muslims on this site do for Valentine's Day. I'm a new muslimah (about 5 months now alhumdulilah) and I bought some Valentine's Day cards for my husband and his sisters so that I could send them in a package that I'm putting together. I was all excited until he told me that he doesn't celebrate Valentines day. I told him I'm sending them anyways but was curious what you all do about it?

Generally Muslims donnot celebrate any holidays other then the 2 Eids. Many do thou celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and secular holidays... depends on the person.

Um my opinion about sending your husband Valentine's Day card, well unless he clearly said 'no' then I see nothing wrong with it. Maybe he will change his mind since marrying you ( to celebrate these holidays) but maybe not. Something to discuss with him...

Thanks I did discuss it with him. I was moreso looking for how you deal with a holiday that you don't celebrate when everyone else is. Funny enough Christmas didn't bug me at all since I flew out Christmas night so my mind wasn't on all of the celebrations. For some reason Valentine's day is different for me though. Anyways thanks for the input. :luv:

Valentine's Day isn't a Muslim holiday, but it's not really a Christian one either, as it's currently celebrated.

Muslims in Morocco might not celebrate Valentine's Day, but my (small number of) American Muslim friends do; flowers, chocolates, cards, overpriced restaurant meals, you know, the usual.

I'd introduce it as an American custom that you'd like to share with him and his family. It might not be a Morrocan thing to celebrate, but you're not Moroccan. :)

He's not moroccon either but I get your point.

I think I'll just treat it as just another day. It actually is routed in Saint Valentine though isn't it? Or do I have that wrong?

It's about as rooted in Valentine's Day as Halloween is rooted in ancient druidic religion. That is, there's a nice just-so story to tell, but the two really don't have much to do with each other. St. Valentine was an early martyr who doesn't even have a feast day for Catholics any more, because so much of what was believed to be the case about his life is now thought to be just old myth and legend.

Sorry, doodlebug, don't know why I said Morocco.

Well, this year won't be much of a v-day for us. I asked if he celebrated V-day and he said yes. He did get me and my daughter a gift, however, he is not allowed to send silver through the mail. Go figure. So, next year, we will celebrate together.

Wow that's so weird about the silver! I wonder why that is? I can understand not sending produce and things like that but I'm at a loss as to what harm silver could cause.

Our wedding anniversary is February 15. Shonnie reminded me today that with 2/14, we can do a twofer. As a Muslim, I don't mind Valentine's Day. At least it's positive and religiously neutral. And I love chocolate!

I like Easter for the chocolate bunnies, too!

It probably has to do with some sort of trade rules/shipping things by mail. My mom can send me homemade jams, candies, etc. but "storebought" stuff are non-nos, theoretically you aren't supposed to import new goods that you "could" buy in the US. That's why all my stuff that I shipped by mail I had to mark as "used" or "gifts" on the customs forms. Just my thoughts. :)
