So my wife and I went to the Italian Embassy yesterday to apply for a tourist visa for her to go with me to Rome next month. She has a green card with her married name on it. Her passport has an amendment showing her married name. However, the embassy insisted on issuing the visa in her maiden name because that is the name on the photo page of the passport. We told the embassy that we had booked her ticket under her married name but they wouldn't budge. When I told my travel agent that the visa will be in her maiden name, they told me they had to rebook my wife's ticket so that her name matches the name on the visa. Argh!

This makes me wonder why we paid the money to have my wife's passport amended with her married name if she still can't travel internationally under her married name. What is the deal? Should I just tell her to get a new passport or is there a way to convince people to honor the passport amendment and let her travel under her married name?

I agree that's the easiest thing to do, but my wife doesn't want to pay to replace a valid passport.

Has anyone else had an experience with trying to travel under married name after having their existing passport amended?

If your wife dont want to pay to get a new passport then she may have problems going anywhere with her old one... dont think there are many countries that will issues a visa in a name that is nor on the photo page... even with a stamp inside to say name ammended....

If I was her I would just count it as part of the cost of getting married and moving to another country to live..... and get a new passport.....

Well... for this time... we'll travel on the old one since the Italian Embassy already has it to process the visa.

Hopefully she won't have too much trouble getting back into the US. Her passport cover page and green card names don't match and I'm not sure if the name amendment will be sufficient proof or not. I think we'll take a copy of our marriage certificate to be on the safe side.

My wife had no problem reentering the US with just an I-551 stamp in her passport, maiden name on passport, and our marriage certificate.

New passport for sure - I agree. Why does she 'not want to replace it' btw?

Cos its a 'waste'?

Im thinking possibly..she will get her old one returned if she's worried about losing stamps and 'history' of it.

Really its just easier to get a new oneas soon as you can - save so many other hassles

Getting a new passport has a few benefits you may consider beyond the annoyance of getting together some information and tossing the old one.

First, it's a sign she's a permanent resident! Well, yet another one. There's that warm glow of all that time spent waiting nervously paying off. :)

Second, it's another form of 'official' ID. Although not one you use very often, it's often good to have extra government ID for those times when you may need it.

I also advocate keeping all your information up to date for sheer ease (and to avoid identity theft, but hey). Your wife has changed her name, she's in a new stage of life, and if the rest of her information from here on out has her married name, passport eventually needs to join that.

Just my two bits. ^^

There are only two options: either change the name on the plane ticket or get a new passport, whichever makes more sense. If you are leaving shortly, you may want to get another ticket rather than having to apply for a new passport at the Italian consulate (especially if the consulate is located far from where you live) From what I have read, new biometric passports still take a few weeks to be produced in Europe, unless I'm mistaken.

I have never had trouble traveling on my amended USA passport....

Me either... It's rediculous because that's what the whole ammended stamp is for.

In fact, I've not even said anything and airline workers have automatically flipped to the back page to look for an ammended stamp.

I was told to get a new passport they do not amend them anymore. I was warned if I left the USA and tried to re enter I may not be allowed and I am the USC. All of this was via a telephone call to the Visa services offices. The operator informed me that as of last September they stopped amending passports and all ladies were being told to get new passports issued. I just got a new passport. Good luck.
