Absolutely not. We called the NVC about this (I'm in Australia too) and they could not have been more clear that this needed to be an original and that they can tell.

Don't try to take any shortcuts with the process. They'll get ya for it! Hehe.

Edit: when we got my joint sponsors first lot of paperwork it was signed in blue ink so we had to have them do it again, lol. What we did was chose to send everything to them with clear instructions of where to place their corrected form (we used little flags and everything) and trusted them to follow those instructions and send the package for us. So you can look at doing something like that if you trust your joint sponsor to be really diligent and careful with what they do. Just to clarify: this is in no way a recommendation that you do it this way. It's just something that we chose to do due to the circumstances of our specific situation. Just a disclaimer!

Well, I definitely don't wanna be got ;)

Yea, we were thinking to send everything to him once we're done as well, then Skype them and make sure they filled out everything correctly and placed "all the right junk in all the right places." (I don't even like that song, I dunno why I did that...) We had to do this for the I-130 with someone else as well who had all of my American bank account checks. Worked out fine then :)

Hi

My son (I am his mother) has applied for me. The NVC received my documents on 09-OCT-14 And asked to wait for 60 days. I am reading various sites and people seem to be spending more time. As of now, all my documents were approved and my son's attorney seems to have guided well. But I am curious to know after reading above responses.

What is meant by scan date? (did I receive it or not :reading:) Where do I find it?

Is it advisable to contact NVC in 30 days time and ask the status?

You can call NVC to find out when they scanned your documents in to the system. +1 or 2 days from the delivery date.

Hey folks, some lovely news this morning!! :dancing::dancing:

As of yesterday, November 12th, NVC will no longer collect ORIGINAL CIVIL DOCUMENTS for the IV package. That is correct, you read that right. From now on, photocopies of the civil documents (birth, marriage, police, military, etc) will be accepted. Originals of those documents will be brought to the interview instead!

Information found here (2nd link): http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/law-and-policy/visa-policy-update.html

Direct link to update: http://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/policy_updates/National%20_Visa_Center_No_Longer_Collecting_Original_Civil_Documents_November_2014.pdf

I encourage you all to read the update. For those that haven't sent your packages yet, time to make photocopies of the civil documents and put the originals in a safe place in time for the interview!!

Please note, this does NOT mean you can send photocopies of the AOS form. The form still has to be an original, with the original signature. As should the employment letter, with an original signature. The optional cover letters should be original as well. Besides that, everything else can be photocopies now.

I'm going to guess that this new change will reduce the amount of checklists stating a document isn't an original (when in most cases it is). Not to mention, the scrutiny of civil documents will be less (I'm guessing), thus speeding up the review process. So, good news everywhere :)

Wow, that's great news for those starting their process! my question is though for those of us who sent in all originals, will we be fine with the copies for our interview or do we have to get original police records, marriage and birth certificates all over again?

I'm assuming it'll be the same as before for you, that the originals will get sent to the consulate/embassy and if you're approved, then you'll get them back at the interview. They can't force you to get originals for the interview, as for most, an original is just that, an original where only one is made. (Certified copies are another thing though, so if you want, you can get certified copies of documents for the interview).

For everyone else starting out now though, it'll be following the new procedure.
