Them forwarding your case to NVC isn't what takes so long as it is just the little bit of processing that goes on before NVC contacts you with the instructions for the next few steps. It doesn't take long at all, really. I'm still waiting on my letter to arrive, but it should be here either in the next couple days or by next week as I did DCF and basically skipped NVC. Others seem to report getting theirs around 4-6 weeks, occassionally a couple weeks longer.

In the meantime you could at least be organizing your I-864 stuff and gathering civil documents that don't expire, such as beneficiary's birth certificate. Any documents that aren't in English or the language of the embassy/consulate where the case will be forwarded to need to be professionally translated, unlike at the USCIS stage where you can do the translations yourself.

You can call NVC at 1-603-334-0700 two weeks after your NOA2 date to obtain your case #. Its very busy so call first thing in the morning when they open (7am Eastern Standard time).

I did receive a letter in the mail about 3-4 weeks after my NOA2, but sometimes people don't receive a letter. After the NVC sends your case to the embassy, I believe the embassy sends information to the beneficiary. Ask in your regional forum to get consulate specific information.

You can check your status at this link after your get your case #

Best of Luck!
