Well I’ve been pestering my guy to get a birth certificate, because he will need it at the interview. Here’s what I found out: when he first entered school in 1st grade, no one knew his birth date. So the Headmaster put down he was born July 1st. Oh and by the way, out of the 9 other students in that grade in his hostel, 5 other boys got the same birth date! (Guess that day had special meaning to the Headmaster!) So July 1st it was. From that time, that was his DOB – including on things like voting card and ration card.

Until many years later, my guy found out it was written down in the house that he was actually born on October 10th. So he has been (secretly) celebrating that date every year, as his birthday.

He has a combo birth/caste certificate that was issued saying he was born on July 1st, so he used that to get his passport.

Now the other day for the first time he went hither and thither and finally found the new birth registry office. Wow – there the files said he was born on December 23rd! :o They absolutely REFUSE to issue any other certificate – gotta be December 23 or nothing!

Of course, with a VERY fat bribe, the uncle of a friend assures my guy that he can get the office to issue a birth certificate stating he was born July 1st (which would match up with his passport). OR my guy could always have his mother issue a statement through the village authorities stating he was born July 1st (a cheaper option).

Now what?!!

My husband also had a couple birthdays and had to change his name so it was right on the certificate:

He was born on the Catholic Day of the Cross (celebrated in his community and mother can't be mistaken) but his dad went to file for him late and they tried to charge him a fine for not filing sooner, so he just said his son was born 12 days later.

His dad took the grandma with him to register the birth and the grandma put her last name as my husband's last name. But at school he was known by his dad's last name. So we had to bribe the mayor's office to change it and his dad has to "recognize" him as a son. But we got it figured out and were able to get married! The name thing happened to his sister too.

I have yet to change my name to reflect the marriage, as I don't want to change my passport or visa application papers to confuse the whole process.
