“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

True, and I don't think this mindset/attitude is something that is solely in black society, but I do think it is more predominant.

Another part of this mentality I don't understand is people who can cheer their favorite sports player on and wear their jersey, but turn around and say they aren't black enough, or that they've sold out their fellow black people. This just happened last week with Seattle Seahawks QB russell Wilson, and it's been said many times before. I believe the term used is "Cornball Brother", it's been used to describe Robert Griffin 3rd as well.

I don't like sports. So you think all black people like sports?

It goes back to what I said. Black in today's society is firmly placed in a certain area in our minds. Loud, vulgar, uneducated, thuggish, prone to violence are considered black traits. In the movie Dear White people, you had a black guy who didn't qualify as being "black" because he didn't adhere to the stereotype.

So why embrace that negative stereotype? Wouldn't the prudent answer to something so negative be to show people wrong? And when members of black society do become successful, why not embrace them as successful role models and say to the simple minded "I told you so"?

And women.

His problems are ridiculous. I see it from both sides as well.

There's a Frederick Douglass quote that sums this up perfectly. Trying to find it...

Give me a second trying to find this quote from Frederick Douglass that explains this perfectly.

This Doctor is pretty remarkable and a great role model for anyone, no matter their skin color.

"55 mph reminds me to be excellent all the time. Wear a tie and white coat each day, rather than the scrubs my partners prefer," McGriff wrote.

"There's a thin line between 55 mph and 'step and fetch.' I am always glad to excel at the former without devolving into the latter."

While McGriff says he is forced to do things most other doctors wouldn't necessarily do, he also notes that the disparity — while seeming unfair — has served up a bit of sweet irony: It has helped make him a better doctor. At a time when cost-cutting and understaffing place pressure on physicians to move swiftly through their rounds, McGriff adopted a bedside manner to earn a patient's trust that has now become his signature at Rutherford Regional hospital.

"I make a point to do something that many of my partners don't do — most physicians don't do anymore. I sit," McGriff says. "I sit in the room, and I ask the patient to tell me their story. I'm really interested in these stories, by the way, and every client I meet has a very interesting story.

Yes he is.

I'm still looking for it, I posted it here a while ago in response to someone. But to answer your question:

Because it's a double edge sword. If you rise above it and you prove folks wrong, you don't become a beacon for your people. You are now one of "them". The "good" ones. You are the exception, not the rule. You see it here when comments are made like, I wish we had more of you or them, meaning "good" black people. It's almost like your skin tone gets a slight bleach job. You go from being a black guy to a black in skin tone alone guy. You'll hear comments like, he doesn't act black so he's cool. Or if you're a woman, you're cool because you don't act "ghetto".

I'm going to find this quote if it's the last thing I do.

No biggie on the quote Marv, I get it. I was curious where the self destructive mindset came from and you've answered that, along with Hail Ming, thanks.

I get where he is coming from. You know better than anyone here, we have been told repeatedly that we won't amount to anything. So, within our community especially, this does ring true.

Acts of "self-destruction" may be merely metaphorical ("social suicide") or literal (suicide). Generally speaking, self-destructive actions may be deliberate, born of impulse, or developed as a habit. The term however tends to be applied toward self-destructions that are potentially habit-forming or addictive, and are thus potentially fatal.

Self destruction is clearly only a "black" thing.

That's not very Black of you J.

I know. I need my black card pulled. lol
