Report: Iran close to trying space launch

Jan 26, 2007 11:18 AM CST

UNDATED- Iran may be preparing to launch a satellite into orbit, according to a report in the Jan. 29 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine.

The reported Iranian space launcher, which U.S. intelligence agencies believe to be a derivation of the Shahab 3 ballistic missile, has recently been assembled and "will liftoff soon" with a satellite, according to Iranian officials.

Western officials fear that the Iranian space vehicle could lead to upgrades in Iran's missile technology, eventually leading to an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range capable of reaching Europe, Russia, China and India, the magazine reports.

"A reconnaissance satellite of reasonable performance should weigh about 300 kilograms [660 lb.]," says Uzi Rubin, the former head of the Israel Missile Defense Organization, in a report for The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. "Once Iran learns how to put 300 kilograms into earth orbit, it could adapt the satellite launcher into an ICBM that could drop more than 300 kilograms anywhere in the world."

Many experts believe that the development of a space launch vehicle could be a sign of growing technological cooperation between Iran and North Korea.

According to analysts at strategic think tank GlobalSecurity.org, the new Iranian modification could lead to an Iranian clone of the North Korean Taep'O-Dong 2C/3 ballistic missile that failed in a launch attempt from North Korea last July, the magazine reports.

The U. S. Defense Intelligence Agency has told the Congress that Iran may be capable of developing a 3,000-mile range ICBM by 2015, the magazine reports.

Add to that bit a news this:

Lawmaker: Iran installing centrifuges By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran has begun installing 3,000 centrifuges, a top lawmaker said Saturday.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the installation "stabilizes Iran's capability in the field of nuclear technology," the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Large scale use of centrifuges is necessary to enrich enough uranium for use in a nuclear reactor. Highly enriched uranium is required to make nuclear weapons.

Put these two together and we have the same danger we had with the USSR in the early 60's. The only difference here is that the USSR didn't want to start WW3. Iran does.

I'm not worried...I'm sure Pelosi, Hillary, Kennedy, Reid, and company have it all under control. ;)

And then there is the UN.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Yes, I feel so secure with them on the job.

I feel better with today's assembly than I have or ever would with Bush and his Republican rubberstamps in Congress. Now once Bush is out, we might just stand a chance of getting things somewhat straightened out in the world again. No Democrat and no UN has done as much damage in the world as one George W Bush. Always remember that!

Sorry ET. Bush hasn't done a tiny amount of the damage that the dems and UN have done. We might as well surrender now if a liberal dem gets in the white house. The dems and the UN are full of wimps that will not defend us. You can't negotiate with a terrorist or a terrorist state like Iran.

But I am sure you will disagree.

You might think I'm being smug and flippant with my response, but I'm not. The following quote from the article sums it up.

...eventually leading to an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range capable of reaching Europe, Russia, China and India, the magazine reports.

I don't see the USA in that equation. And until we do...the best thing we can do is get our energy policy in order and disengage from the region. Our main tie to the region is dependence on foreign oil and it is a hangman's noose around our neck. It has been for a long time. It is about time for our country to wake up to that fact. We aren't in Iraq for freedom and democracy. It's the oil. Cheap, plentiful oil on the world market. Oil is in one big pool..it doesn't matter to the world market whether it comes from Iran, Russia, Mexico, Canada, etc. It is one big market.

The only thing that makes Iran important to us is oil. I'm more afraid of that power than their nukes or lack of thereof.

Or put it together with the reports of WMD and believe every lie you hear.

Thank you for making my point. To you there is no danger. It's all a lie made up by Bush. Hiding your head in the sand will get us all killed.

If Bush is such a muthafcuking hero on the global stage and such an unbelievable genius when it comes to international peace and stability, then how come both North Korea and Iran are going nuclear under his watch? Right under his muthafcuking nose. And they ain't being sneaky about it either. Make it known to everyone out there that they don't give a ** what he says. And they declare that there ain't a thing Bush can do about it. And they're right, he can't do a first thing about it as he has no credibility in the world. Not an ounce. You see, just as you can't negotiate with terrorists, you can't scare maniacs into compliance. Much less if those maniacs know that you ain't got what it takes to put your money where your mouth is.

Either way, what Bush and his inept crew have done is the sort of defending of this nation that I most certainly can live without. We'd all be better off if Bush had never happened. HW should have used a darn condom.

Your joking right? N Korea made all their nuclear research under the Carter Admin. Short of going to war there was little we could do. Come to think of it Iran became a radical nation under Carter also. First you ###### that Bush is doing something and now you ###### that he didn't. It's the dems fault the mid-east is screwed up. It all just came to a head in the last 6 years. The situation in the mid east isn't Bush's fault. He was just left to deal with the cosequenses of the previous admins.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Before Jan 2001 the mid-east was all lollypops and rainbows. Everyone loved each other and it was an utopia. Then along came that evil Dubia and his sinister plan to take over the world!!! Damn you Dubia! You ruined a perfect world!!

I don't recall the pretenses being "Iraq is not lollipops and rainbows, .:. we invade." I remember something about WMDs? Or am I making that up? Oops, that was someone else...

I'm not saying the ME was paradise before we invaded but after 9/11 we (the US) pretty much had sympathy around the globe. Then we went into Iraq without UN approval and with few allies and as it turned out there were no WMD's and Iraq was not behind 9/11. Now we're stuck in a no win situation and each day more die and for what?
