Had my interview today. I received the "a decision cannot be made at this time" letter... because they wanted some of our relationship evidence to be photocopied, not original.

I provided a huge pile of evidence, some photocopied, some not. I've combed the yellow letter several times and there is no mention of compulsory photocopies. It just says "bring the following documents." Obviously I missed something somewhere, but I can't help but feel that this is unfair.

I would advise everyone to photocopy everything, just in case you are delayed in the same way. My spouse is due to start a course abroad in Sept and now we might have to leave without getting citizenship. They apparently have 120 days to respond before I can do anything.

I'm trying not to feel too angry at the thousands I've spent on this process, and the months I spent preparing for this day, when they couldn't (or wouldn't) photocopy two items.

I do feel your pain. They did give you a different reason that what they gave me, but basically the reason you and I both received was a complete joke in that a decision could not be made.

If you don't mind me asking, was your case pretty clean cut ? Mine was...I have no convictions, have been here a solid 3 years, minus a week in Mexico, no driving tickets or anything. I supplied all evidence and they had a computer problem at the USCIS office, so i'm waiting also.

What ticks me off even more is i'm following the other threads and I see in the Jan 2015 applicants people got a decision cannot be made last Wednesday 22 april and they have already received updates saying they are now in line for oath.

So I think the reason they gave you was pretty terrible, hopefully they get it sorted quickly and get you in for an oath ceremony.

If it helps. I spoke with USCIS about what you can do when a decision cannot be made and they said you can call again if you don't hear anything after 60 days and then schedule an INFOPASS just after the 90 day mark. Hopefully it won't come to that.

FIngers crossed for you

Thanks, jimmypesto. I'm sorry you're in the same situation. (What does it even mean, "there's some information on another computer"? Do they not have a network, and why don't they have access to your info?)

Yes, my case should have been clear-cut too. Nothing out of the ordinary, we've just been a regular couple for the last 5 years, no convictions/immigration violations etc. I did all the tests, the IO went through all the paperwork, had me sign the sheets, was talking about how they are going to print my name on the naturalization certificate, and then at the last minute handed me the sheet with my result and told me to come back with photocopies. I was blindsided.

Thanks for the info on a plan of action. That's good to know, though citizenship still might not be an option for us given the timeline. I would have thought they'd be doing what they could to secure my taxes for life, but obviously not! It makes me sad to think about what applicants might go through when they don't have the 'privileges' of being white, educated, or speaking English well.

I'll have my fingers crossed for you, too!

At least you have some light at the end of the tunnel. Get those photocopies in and hopefully you will receive an oath update a few weeks later. Has you online case status changed to RFE ? or awaiting information ?

I'm surprised that they did that to you on the 5 year rule. I know in my case I had to supply everything as I was applying on the 3 year rule. I even printed out my 2014 tax return and transcript and even though the officer did not ask for them. I asked him to put them in my file, which he did , As i know they do need them.

Keep us posted on how the progress goes, If I get any updates on my case I will update also.

Now we play the waiting game......................................

Finally they updated my status on line, i received a text to say that I was in Put in line for scheduling an interview. After reading the above post I am not sure I am looking forward to it anymore. I guess I can always stay loyal to the Queen.

Some people have complicated cases.

Some people just get rude or unprofessional interviewers.

The overwhelming majority of interview experiences written up on VJ say something like this: "Interviewed today. In and out in 15 minutes. Approved. When will I get the oath letter?"

So my advice is, don't worry too much because chances are everything will be fine. If you do hit a road bump, then you'll know that you aren't the only one.

Completely agree with this. There's no point in worrying too much and going overboard with preparation like I did... all that extra stress seems ridiculous if you just have bad luck on the day. Just get everything in order and learn your civic questions and I'm sure you will be absolutely fine. Congrats on your case moving along and good luck!!!

Xylo, have you dropped the photocopies off or did they give you a day when you have to take them in? Good luck, hopefully it resolves soon.

Hiroin, good luck today and please share your experience.

Following your cases closely as you've both have interviews in Denver. We are next for Denver tomorrow so we're getting our photocopies together (Thanks xylo for the tip)

Yes, I literally went home, copied what they wanted and went back again. Had to go through security again and wait in a different waiting room for a while. I wasn't able to see the same IO. The person who took the docs off me said it will likely be a while before I hear anything (and my online case status hasn't changed from "your interview was scheduled").

Also, just in case you're interested, I turned up 20 mins early for my interview and was called 20 mins after my appointment time (40 min wait). The actual interview was quick.

I'm glad you're prepared with your copies. Who knows, you might not even be asked for them!

Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

Just got back from my interview. I am sure hiroin was also in for a very unique experience.

The security guards at the checkpoint told me that there seemed to be something wrong today since no one had shown up for citizenship interview (at 8:30 AM).
The Denver district office usually starts interviewing people at 7:30 AM. This is exactly what I suspected would happen, i.e. lots of no shows.
I was told to proceed to the waiting room on the second floor. Indeed, the entire room was empty, except the security guard and me!

About 10 minutes later, the immigration officer came out to get me into his office.
On the way to his office, he said that no one had shown up yet for their interview appointment.
I then told him that I got my interview appointment notice after making several phone calls to the USCIS and got the notice through fax a week ago due to the 7-day policy which the IO wasn't even aware of.
He then put down the information I gathered, and said he would need to report to his supervisor and other IOs.
Yes, this is a major screw-up as he admitted.

Before he started the interview, another IO knocked on the door and informed him that there would be no oath ceremony this afternoon because of the screw up.
I would guess that hiroin and I would be the only two to appear for the interview today.

The civis questions are:
1. Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? (Thomas Jefferson)
2. Who is the Commander in Chief of the military? (the president)
3. What is the political party of the President now? (Democratic party)
4. What are the two major political parties in the United States? (Democratic and Republican)
5. There were 13 original states. Name three. (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania)
pause, the IO was ready to give me a pass, but realized he had to ask another one
6. Name one state that borders Mexico. (California)

reading test:
Who elects congress?

writing test:
The people elect congress.

Then, the IO went through my application quickly. I made a few errors on travel dates and handed him a new copy of the page and he didn't seem to care.

I was given Form N-652 saying I passed the tests of English and US history and government.
My application has been recommended for approval.

Then, the IO started to gather info about what went wrong. I told him that it's very likely that none of those applicants whose interview was scheduled on 3/23 received the notice because you never sent them.
He thanked me for providing the info, and put down the date 3/23. He even said that he never saw the interview notice through fax like the one I have.

No same day oath because of their mistake. I'll need to wait for a letter from them. He said it's probably going to be on a Friday.
Please do send me the oath letter, please.

Thank you for sharing. I have my interview scheduled for June (Denver). Was very surprised to see the interview letter 3days after online status changed for "interview scheduled". Maybe they noticed their mistake and trying to do everything not to repeat it. Congrats on passing the test and hopefully the oath ceremony is only a few days away.

Best of luck to you tomorrow.

One more note: I left Boulder at 6 AM because I wanted to avoid being stuck in traffic. I arrived at the Denver office at 7:20, but they would not allow me in since my appointment was scheduled for 9 AM. The security guards told me to come back at 8:30, and suggested that I go to Starbucks nearby which I did. Obviously, they still didn't know what's going to happen yet, i.e. no one was going to show up. I went over to Starbucks to get something to drink, killed an hour there, and returned to the office. Again, the parking lot was still empty. When I stepped in the building at 8:30, the guards already sensed that something unusual was happening, since an hour had passed and I was still the only one to show up for the citizenship interview.

When I went up to the waiting room on the second floor, it was totally empty. While I was waiting to be called, I noticed the security guard was really focused on playing games in his cellphone. LOL! Later, a few IOs walked out of their office and said to the guard that they would be able to have lunch at noon with no delay today. They were clearly puzzled by why no one had shown up, and ironically I was the one to provide them the answer of their puzzle. My IO had to take notes on how I got the notice through fax, the 7-day rule, and most importantly this forum. I said, "I wish someone in your office would read this forum and you would have known something went seriously wrong".

Like a coworker predicted, the officers in the Denver office are in for an "off day" today.

KataS: No, they had no idea what they didn't do until I told them this morning. They were puzzled by why all the applicants chose not to show up altogether today.

Thank you Jack-Den for all the info!!!

We'll provide an update tomorrow

Congrats on passing and hopefully you have the oath ceremony soon

cheers
