I'm not sure I understand your question... are you talking about the oath ceremony or the naturalization interview?

At the oath ceremony, everyone recites the oath of citizenship, the pledge or allegiance, and sings the national anthem, but all three are written down on the papers they give you during the ceremony and you repeat the oath of citizenship after the person administering the oath.

If you're talking about the interview; I've never heard of anyone being asked to do that, although I have read about several people being asked to explain the meaning of the oath. This usually only happens when the applicant's English skills are very weak. Many interviewers will still pass an applicant who can barely speak English if he or she can demonstrate that he/she understands what they are signing.

at my interview, i wasn't asked to recite the star spangled banner or the pleadge of allegaince. at my oath,which was the same day, the star spangled banner was shown to us in a short video on their tv there. As for the pledge of allegiance, the immigration officer asked us to repeat after him. so he said the pledge of allegiance and we just repeated what he said.

If you are ask this, just say that you've never memorized either the Pledge of Allegiance or the Star-Spangled Banner and that most Americans you know haven't either. It is not a requirement of naturalization and is not part of the test It's just an interviewer being a pain in the

I absolutely need the certificate the same day as the ceremony as I am flying out of the country in less than a week, and I am planning on using it as ID to get my same day passport. If the answer is "depends" then I'm going to express mail my request for a new oath date tomorrow morning...

Everyone gets their naturalization certificate at the oath ceremony (at the ceremony, not the interview). I don't know what you read in people's signatures but the only reason to get your certificate later is if there's a mistake on the one they give you at the ceremony.

Note1 - that if you mail your request tomorrow there is a good chance that they won't prpcess your request in time and you will be considered a no-show at your ceremony. They move slowly. They will send you a request for an explanation that you will have to respond to within a month.

Note 2 - Most passport offices require an appointment... you have I go to a passport agency, not a post office or other application acceptance facility. You probably know that, but it's very important because there are only a handful of these around the country. Make an appointment as soon as possible. Some offices only provide same day service if you are leaving within 48 hours. Otherwise they will overnight your passport to you.
