I'm not disputing the existence of Jesus - I simply saying that there are probably a lot of differences between the historical person and the idealised version of him that is central to Christian beliefs.

It is possible to believe that the guy existed and understand the values he stood for, without believing say, that he turned water into wine by magic.

Maybe he had some hidden wine bottles no one saw. Magicians do magic all the time no one can explain. This is why people love to go see magician shows and illusionist.

I'm not disputing what you are saying, but magic tricks were not just invented yesterday.

Do you think I think that? Is that what I said?

Why do I feel like you're having a totally different conversation to the one I am.

No. I do not believe that Jesus is a supernatural figure.

You are not responding to me personally so maybe we are having a different conversation.

Now I understand what you are saying. I wasn't sure if this was what you were implying or not.

So what do you believe he was or is? A God following magician that traveled throughout the land urging people to do good?

If you are quoting Leviticus in this conversation, you are saying that you are either:

(a) conducting your life entirely by the word of Leviticus... such as like stoning adulterers and brides who are not virgins, and executing a married couple for having sex during the woman’s period

or

(b)

You cherry pick the "good soundbites" and you yourself are as hypocritical as all the others!

"Gay Rights" is not about abolishing the religious beliefs of the sheeple.... it is about not shunning & discriminating against others! You don't "believe in" or condone gay marriage - fine, then don't marry someone of the same gender as you. But what gives you the "right" to deny that for someone else?!

The fact that this debate is still raging just pisses me off!!

Neither, actually. Just answering a fellow VJ'er. I don't really care one way or the other. But if it's my opinion yer asking for on why some people are so dead set against gays, it's because it just goes against the natural order of things. 2,000 years of us being on the earth, and you expect to overcome all the bias (religious and otherwise) in one generation? If gays were more prevalent, or more the "norm" in our society, it sure would make it hard to populate the earth. Unless you force heterosexual couples to pump out babies for the gay couples to marry, that is.

Might not matter now, at least not for hundreds of years, given the current world population, but it sure would have made it difficult for you and I to have this convo if the last 10 generations of our families were all gay, eh?

"Natural order of things"?! Except there have been MANY studies and cases that show animals exhibit homosexual behaviour too... Being gay is not "unnatural"! People don't wake up one day and think "hey I'm going to be gay from here on out..." Did you wake up one lovely morning and think :"hey I am going to be hetero"?!

"make it hard to populate the earth." again calling bs on this... if the argument were solely about procreation, then I guess we had better start railing against all the childless hetero couples, like my sister who has chosen not to have children. There are more than enough ways for a homosexual couple to have children, whether it is through adoption or sperm donor or whatever. Who care?!

True, they are not nor have not been the majority. But you have yet to even remotely come close to any sort of "reasonable" excuse as to why a gay couple should not be allowed to marry, take advantage of their spouse's benefits, raise a family together... generally all the wonderful things you and your significant other get to do!

Don't fool yourself into thinking being gay is anything new. There were homosexuals hundreds of years ago too. It just was not discussed or as open as it is today. Nor was there the media saturation we have today.

It is apparent from reading this thread that some people really dislike American values, the Constitution and religious and personal liberty. I also now fully comprehend why my beloved got the hell out of Tennessee to live with the Sodomites in California.

Tennessee is an ugly place to be, people wise that is. The behavior is horrible. Other than that, the natural beauty is breathe-taking.

I left Tennessee over 2 years ago and haven't visited since. I make my relatives come to me. That shows you what I think of Tennessee. Didn't want my husband to have to move to the U.S. and live there.

I'm relieved that I grew up in the People's Republic of New England, where I was dandled on the knees of gay people, Unitarians, Muslims, folk singers and pinkos from my earliest days, even if it did mean I had to eat a lot of carob and I never got to eat a Twinkie until I was 16.
