One more Question: Do we need to wait two weeks to apply for SSN?

Hi again all!

One more question: since the I94 is electronic, do we still need to wait two weeks to apply for his SSN? Also, what is the number we use to apply for his EAD before we file for AOS? I know it is C9 if we file concurrently with the AOS, but we are considering filing for this early.

Thanks everyone!

You can apply for the SSN as soon as you can. Since the I-94 is electronic, the SAVE database is updated immediately following your POE.

If you file for the EAD before marriage, your category will be A6.

In consideration of filing early for the EAD, keep in mind this EAD will only be valid as long as your I-94 is valid. This EAD will expire 90 days after your POE, and will cost you $380. Also, it takes about 2 to 3 months to get approved.

I would not suggest filing for the EAD prior to filing for the K1, you'll just throw your money at USCIS for a denial.

Chances are slim you'll get the EAD approved, as your I-94 will expire by the time they'd be issuing it.

Save that $380 and put it towards your AoS. If you file for the EAD and AP with or after the AoS the fees for the EAD and AP are waived.

You can apply for a SSN asap, with the electronic I-94 the SAVE DB is updated immediately. No more wait! It'll take about 4 weeks to show up in the mail. If your fiance(e) is changing their last name, it's recommended that you get the SSN before the wedding. Either way, make sure their name is on the mailbox!

Filing for the EAD before AOS under the (a )(6 ) category is a pointless waste of money. It takes 2-3 months to receive and will expire when your I-94 does. The I-94 is only good for 90 days, so you will be paying $380 for an EAD that you won't really be able to use. It is not renewable.

When you file for the EAD when filing for AOS under the category of (c )(9 ), the fees for the I-765(EAD) and I-131(AP) forms are waived. The EAD/AP will not only be free in that case, but will not expire for a year and is renewable(also with no fee), if needed.

Thank you all so much!!!

My fiance does want to change his name, we both do actually! But will that make our AOS weird, if we both change our names? Will it complicate things?

For example; he really dislikes his formal, legal name. The gov't of Cambodia made him change his name when he went to high school because of weird govt regulations, but informally he still goes by his old name, Tee, as a nickname.

Now he wants to change his name to my name, and I want to change my name to Megan Tee. Would that raise concerns in the USCIS if I changed my name to his nickname, instead of his formal, legal name?

You need to check with laws of your state for name changes though marriage. If you are able to make those changes through marriage, then no problem. Your marriage certificate will act as the legal name change document. If you cannot make those changes through marriage, then you will need to go through court for a name change. You will need to supply a copy of the court-ordered name change document as proof of legal name change.

Contact the county court where you will get your license and ask them if the name changes you want done can be accomplished through marriage alone.

When you apply for your marriage license, they'll give you the options you have regarding name changing. Good luck!

Hi Megan and Tee, I read your other post about work and you did get good advise. Wait till you have proper documents. Here is my suggestion that will help us in Cambodia and keep Tee busy for a little while. There is little or no information posted on the Cambodian portal about what happens after NVC sends you a letter stateing that your file has been sent to PP embassy. Walk us through the details such as what is listed below.

1-How do you recieve notification from the US Embassy- Email- or snail mail or smoke signals

2-How to obtain a Police Certificate. Not just the address that is easy but what office and what documents to bring. Are photos needed? What is the cost?

3-How to get an appointment for medical check without going to PP. Not all applicants live in that city.

4-Translation of documents. Cost of translation.

5- Any other valuable information that may help

6- Not all of us speak Khmer while attempting to complete this process.

Help us out and good luck.
