Hi guys, my fiancée have a question about the poverty guideline and income requirement for the affidavit if support, Is the amount on the poverty guideline BEFORE or aFTER tax? Coz her monthly income is like 2k/month before tax or she makes roughly 1500/month after taxes. We're wondering if she's gonna qualify, were worried and we don't waana get denied coz of that. Any response will be greatly appreciated :)

Yes, I agree with the previous post. You will be fine because they don't take what you pay in taxes into consideration. They also don't take into account any debts that you may have either.

In order to get the yearly amount you have to multiply what she makes in one week by 52, if she gets paid weekly. If she gets paid every 2 weeks, you would multiply that by 26. Or you can just calculate her hourly rate and multiply it by the number of hours worked per week, and then multiply that by 52.

@ianh hi thanks for the reply, one more question though (sorry for taking advantage) how bout the letter from her employer? Does it has to be signed by the hr people or her immediate supervisor/manager that has to sign it. Coz she said she can't get ahold of the hr manager, anything that's coming from her hr manager is being faxed to their office so obviously she can't obtain a paper with original signature (wet signature) in it. Thanks

It can be signed by anyone there who has authority to sign that document. If the supervisors have that authority then they can sign it.

I work for a mega corporation and getting HR to sign anything like that is impossible. The company has its own income and employment verification sheet on its network that you can print out. Hopefully, that is not a problem

Maybe it works differently in your company, but that I'm aware of the HR department is the one responsible for employee records.

HR is outsourced and not located in the city where I work. However, there is a link on their shared services page which allows you to put in a PIN and login etc. in order to access an employment and income verification form. The website also says such data is valid for immigration purposes, including homeland security. With that said, no one from HR signs that page.

we went through the same thing with my husband's former company. we printed his income verification sheet from a website as well as his salary/paychecks to date (neither of which were signed) and the US embassy in Singapore happily accepted that.

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!

That's definitely more convenient. I wish all employers were like that. My mother has been going through hell to get an employment letter and the HR lady there never picks up the phone.
