URGENT: Obama Admin Will Issue Travel Bans… But It’s Not What You Think

Probably because locking up foreign nationals and USCs who haven't committed any crime is a bit excessive. The disease isn't contagious until symptoms manifest. People who turn up at an airport with active symptoms should certainly be quarantined (which is what is happening), but quarantining everyone who flies in from a particular country? Its not necessary.

If you're in the military, the government owns you.

All true, seems excessive.

But Thomas Duncan was not symptomatic until he was here for some time, yet had still been exposed and had contracted the disease. I fly from the Mideast and/or Asia to the US and back several times a year in 24 hours door to door. The incubation period is 21 days, lot of room for people who are not symptomatic but still have already contracted the disease to get here or else where in the world, which spreads the disease. It seems reasonable that people requesting a Visa from the US have the 21 days quarantine. A logistical nightmare I concede. As to USC and ones that already have Visa and GC I honestly don't know.

Earlier in this string someone state we need to attack this at the source, I agree completely. That is the first priority, an outbreak in the US or any other country will only increase the risks.

There is some risk management at work here. Travel to and from the region is already limited in that there are not that many flights in and out anymore anywhere. It's already difficult for people to get in and out. That means it is already difficult to get aid and personel in.

I believe the decision has been made that the importance of stopping the epidemic in West Africa has been given priority over the chance of isolated travellers leaving the region. The reasoning is that if the epidemic cannot be stopped in West Africa, it will eventually spread outward to the rest of the world. That scenario is worse than isolated travellers getting through.

I'll add here, as the epidemic spreads, it's not just numbers but geographic area. Humans are not a natural host for Ebola, which is why we either die horribly or recover with some level of immunity. In humans the epidemic would eventually run it's course.

The natural host is thought to be fruit bats. Fruit bats fly around happily with Ebola like nothing is wrong. They can spread it to each other through body fluid contact, and then go about their business. About 1500 miles from Liberia is the coast of Spain. Spain also has fruit bats. So does other parts of Europe, Australia Asia, the Middle East and of course Africa.

In 1899 a ship sailing from Asia to San Francisco introduced bubonic plague to America. Nowadays, every prairie dog in America potentially harbors Yersinia Pestis, the bacteria that causes plague. Not a huge deal anymore since it's succeptible to penicillin and almost every other antibiotic in that class.

Anyway, in case anyone really wants something to worry about, worry about Ebola reaching Europe or the Middle East. The talk about Ebola going global is not just "talk". If it can't be contained in West Africa, that's what will happen.

Why can't they do both?

Why can't they do both?

IDK. That's the million dollar question.

My guess would be if they restrict travel completely, there won't be any flights. Airlines are not going to fly empty planes. It's already happened with countries that have travel restrictions.

It seems the quarantined family who was exposed by Duncan hit the 21 day mark yesterday with no further infection. Good news.

Also, two countries in Africa are now ebola free. Perhaps due to a less virulent strain of ebola.

The ignorance of the American conservative is an amazing thing.......

What a false, misleading, and inflammatory comment.

Although not across the board, it is true that a vast contingent of conservatives have fallen prey to the Teahadists and behave in a fashion aptly dubbed 'the American Taliban'.

It would be unwise to put all conservatives in one same category though.

And yet it holds quite a bit of truth as well.

So does this one, but you'd see a fair amount of folks getting upset and reporting if it is said:

The ignorance of the American liberal is an amazing thing.......

In fact, just recently threads have been closed because someone spoke in a negative manner towards liberals.

True, but it certainly would be out of place in this thread.

There is no doubt there is blind ignorance on both sides, which is why I don't affiliate with either one. However, if I had to pick one side that won the prize in ignorance, it would be the Republicans/Conservatives.
