Non US citizens who live here legally, even temporarily, as is the case of students, are issued valid SS#. SSCs can't be used as proof of citizenship.

Try and keep up. I was pointing out how SS cards could be the basis for a national ID. Not the actual ID. They would need to have a photo on them etc. If they did that, and also notated the citizenship status of the person holding the card, then they could be used as a national ID.

Why would we need a national ID only to satisfy the whim of a couple of governors? We already have a national ID which clearly states the nationality of the holder. it is called a passport and its primary purpose is to be used as a national id, so much so that it is recognized the world over.

You do realize that ID is required for just about everything in the U.S, and it's likely to be required to vote in a lot of states in the near future. A passport is a travel document that can be used as identification, but it's primary purpose is not identification within the U.S.

It still doesn't answer the question as to why we would need a national ID just to please the whim of a couple of governors. If and when the day should come when most states require proof of citizenship in order to vote, then we should discuss the merits of a national id.

A passport is the only picture ID that we currently have that can vouch for one's citizenship.

This "whim" as you call it is supported by roughly 70% of people polled on the issue last year.

G+D can turn this van around right now misters

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

I'm with Karee. An ID that has biometrics on it, accessible only with a 10-digit PIN, encryption, etc. Oh, and a picture, of course.

Anyone ever hear of a CAC??? They're already out there, and they're cheap.

Why not just give everyone an implant chip at birth.. A code can stand for citizen-- Say 666

I did a bit of reading on voter laws here in MA. You must be a citizen to vote, but you can register by mail, when you renew your DL, etc. It is also stated that you may have to show a photo id to prove who you are when you actually vote, but I have never heard of this happening.

There should be a law that says if you tell phony stories and openly (fake) weep on tv during a debate, you must withdraw from the race.
